Best yard sign ever for a millage election benefitting the library

Yard signs aim to save, not close, Troy library
Jul 17, 2011
BY BILL LAITNER
DETROIT FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Those responsible for controversial yard signs planted around Troy say it was a satiric effort aimed at saving the library, not closing it.

Signs appearing around Troy last weekend declared: "Vote to Close Troy Library Aug. 2nd; Book Burning Party Aug. 5th."

An anonymous message by the signs' originators says they were created to spur "passionate discussions ... to save our precious library." They say the signs were intended to raise awareness and participation in the special millage election on Aug. 2.

The anonymous message appeared on a Facebook page and in an e-mail to a Free Press reporter Thursday night, the same day the newspaper published a report about the politically incendiary signs.

News of the revelation buoyed supporters of the library millage and angered those who oppose the tax hike.

2. Here's a picture of a previous book burning party
Berlin, Germany, May 10, 1933

"Among those works burned were the writings of beloved nineteenth-century German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, who wrote in his 1820-1821 play Almansor the famous admonition, 'Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen': 'Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.' 3. I see that the yard sign has the same color scheme
(red, white, and black) as the flag of the Second German Empire (1871-1918):

The flag of the Third German Empire (1933-1945) used the same color scheme. But this is probably just a coincidence.
