(Reuters) - Police have arrested Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News Corp's British newspaper arm News International, Sky News reported on Sunday.

Brooks, 43, resigned over phone hacking allegations at News International's News of the World newspaper, of which she was once editor

1. Rebekah Brooks arrested - sources
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/07/17/uk-newscorp-idUKTRE76A1OJ20110717

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper business, mired in a widening scandal stemming from phone hacking, pledged Sunday to fully cooperate with inquiries by police, who themselves are under mounting pressure for being too close to his media empire.

There also were signs that the resignations of two top Murdoch executives, Rebekah Brooks, who was chief executive of his British newspaper arm News International, and Les Hinton, chief executive of Murdoch's Dow Jones & Co and publisher of The Wall Street Journal, had done little to alleviate pressure on Murdoch and his son James, chairman of News International.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that members of the board of pay-TV operator BSkyB, of which Murdoch's News Corp owns 39 percent and where James Murdoch serves as chairman, are to meet in a special session on July 28 to discuss his future.

4. I bet they NEVER dreamt this could possible happen to them -
they were untouchable. The higher they climb...

I almost feel guilty for being so gleeful about their downfall. I'll get over it. :evilgrin:

8. Yummy
I knew when Les Hinton resigned on Friday that the shit was really starting to hit the fan. "My job was to destroy people's lives" one of the ex-journalists said. Well, the chickens are finally coming home to roost.

12. There is some questions on the timing of this
she is suppose to appear on Tuesday to the Parliament
and this arrest is seen to some as a political arrest by the
police to upset the cart and protect themselves..

They might have waited until Wednesday.... we shall see.

14. We Should Do The Same Here in the U.S.
for the likes of people who run Fox news etc.

The British Parliament is also pushing for the dismantling of the Murdoch empire. There was a time in the
U.S. where no individual or corporation could own multiple newspapers, tv or radio stations.
It was a good law that prevented monopolies that went away with republican "deregulations."

15. emptywheel is noting the timing of this and why they may
have timed it this way. Much more at the site, with many links to more info.

http://www.emptywheel.net/2011/07/17/rebekah-brooks-arrested/

Note this was “by appointment,” but done on a Sunday–an unusual move. When Andy Coulson was arrested back on July 8, also by appointment, the Guardian reported that the Met had sped up the arrest because of leaks.

~~~
A similar worry–that investigative details were leaking out–might explain the timing here. Or, there may be a reason to have Brooks all good and arrested before her appearance at Parliament on Tuesday.
Also includes links to the Independent article noting the person heading the Parliament committee is very cozy with Murdoch and cronies:
21. Layers!
She needs to get a good cut with layers. I think that every time I see her pic. Her hair is beautiful, though. Okay, I think that was the most superficial post I've ever made on DU. :blush:
