Kind of like those teachers pensions, where the lock box has been raided, there will be no pensions, but yet the teachers have to contribute anyway.

Many may say "Oh that won't happen"

I watched the same press conference you guys did - and denial is more than just a river in Egypt

Many may say "Oh there will be SOMETHING left"

Nope, it took 12 Presidential Administrations to do it, but the GOP won. Social Security, that money, is theirs now. Theirs to give back to themselves in sweetheart contracts, free to give to their buddies at defense contractors, etc.

Look - why couldn't the DEFENSE budget be up for grabs?

If we're talking shared sacrifices, how about cutting that one program that doesn't do anyone any good, sucks money right out of the economy, and makes the world hate us?

But no - Obama wants to prove he's not a wimp or some shit

So my question remains - how do I stop paying into Social Security?

2. The SS you are paying now is not for you, but for those collecting it now.
But I'm sure you already knew this.

12. Arguably, the Reagan fix made us pay for both.
In any event if we get hosed then it is theft via violating the social contract.
The deal is I pay for our parents and am supported by our children, there is nothing about a wealth transfer for military adventures I opposed and reduced taxed for the wealthy that I'm willing to swallow.

4. Oh, you can't. It's been the governments dime box since they started raiding it.
the only difference now is, rather than destroying it from the inside out, they are now publicly shredding it.

that reeks of lack of representation. And the stealing of our money.

24. Did you watch the press conference?
In case you missed it there were no specifics, but Obama said Medicare, Social Security were both on the table for cuts. There are a number of DUers who think he's just bluffing, but he is not. Reagan wasn't bluffing when he dipped into it and neither was Clinton when HE dipped into it.

Based on the previous behavior of both Obama and past presidents, this means serious cuts.

Yet defense gets a free ride! Whoopee!! Kill em all and let god sort em out.

25. he never said that...you are lying...
what he did say was that SS was not the reason we have a huge debt and that he wanted to look for ways to strengthen it so that it will last for a very long time into the future...that's what people do here at DU...they make shit up and then hyperspeculate based on the shit they make up...CRAZY!

28. Lying - pretty harsh accusation. Nevertheless, I will give you my reference
"Social Security, if it is part of a package, would be an issue of, how do we make sure Social Security extends its life and is strengthened?" Obama said. The reason to address the retirement system for the elderly during current bipartisan talks, Obama said, is that "if you're going to take a bunch of tough votes, you might as well do it now."

I highlighted the text that says (although you probably disagree) that Social Security is on the table.

Granted, DUers like Mineral Man are right when they say that this doesn't mean Social Security and Medicare will be cut.

But it also means, that they are not exempt from cuts.

11. I wish I knew.
I know now that I'll ever see what I put in. And yes I know that what we are paying now is to support those already drawing on it... but whether there stops being benefits now or later, eventually it will come. So if someone's gotta suffer first, let it be the baby-boomers. Let them reap what they've sown.

Maybe by the time I retire, we'll have come up with a plan B. Or have moved to another country that has an ounce of god-damn sense.

20. As a baby-boomer.....
who paid for the past generation, and have been paying extra for the current generation since Reagan, you can kiss my ass.

If you actually get off your ass and fight for the program, it will be there for you when you retire. That's the big lie they've been surreptitiously pimping, that "SS won't be there for you." That is a lie, if you make it so. It only comes true if you don't work to fight it.

15. Social programs are under attack all over the world.
This is the plan but I think the Global Masters are getting desperate. People will eventually take back their countries imo.

They want to privatize all public funds, they always have. The only difference now is that we used to be able to count on Democrats to stop them.

I believe this is probably the first time since SS was signed into law that a Democratic President has not come out swinging at anyone who dared to attack SS.

Don't give up. It's time to start calling Democrats and letting them know they will lose their jobs if they do not stand up NOW and start fighting.

This is a line in the sand that many people will not cross. Obama, if he goes down this path, will most likely lose the next election.

And any Democrat who is not clear about where s/he stands on this, should be primaried. I hope people will start organizing now. Even if they do this, with a real Progressive Congress, it can be fixed.

Democrats in Congress will accept it, in fact the Senate may throw it back in his face

Second, the repukes already said they will not have ANY tax increases, and SS and Medicare will not be on the table without that

In other words, I suspect nothing will happen to either program this round

However, if the the repukes end up controlling both houses in 2012, the those wonderful retirees in Florida who vote republican deserve everything they get

22. They can kill you if you don't pay...
...into Social Security, unless you quit working or die. Social Security contributions and all Income Tax collections, are enforced at their most base level through the threat and/or application of physical violence by society as executed by the State. Take all the possible permutations of saying "No", not showing up for trial, not filing at all, or flat out refusing to pay... Play them all out to their various bitter ends without ever conceding to relenting or relinquishing your dues, and the State will send armed men to take whatever you possess to cover the difference. If you physically resist this, you will either be successfully physically overpowered or killed. If you are overpowered, they will still take your possessions and you will also then be removed from society to a violent predatory place for a period of time. So, playing the whole song through to the end, if you don't pay your taxes then violence, to one degree or another, will befall you. Best to just pay what they ask and shut up IMHO.
