Should Jim McGovern consider running this year for the Democratic nomination for president?
Edited on Sun Jul-10-11 11:49 PM by Karmadillo
He seems like a good solid liberal who could really help this country extract itself from the hole our elites have been digging for it. Just curious to see what people think. I think for genuinely liberal ideas to have a chance to develop and gain strength, we need to have a liberal run a national campaign for the presidency. The American people would have loved Paul Wellstone if he had ever run, and I would bet, from what I've seen, they could very well come to feel the same way about McGovern. There are some links at the end of the brief bio if you'd like to see where he stands on the issues.

NOTE: Primary discussions haven't seem to have gone too well here in recent times, so if you don't have anything constructive to say, maybe you could just unrec the thread and have all your friends do the same. Otherwise, people will think you're just trying to get the thread shut down and what kind of DUer would do that?

Since his election in 1996, Congressman Jim McGovern has been widely recognized as a tenacious advocate for his district, a tireless crusader for change, and an unrivaled supporter for social justice and fundamental human rights.

<edit>

McGovern has authored important legislation to increase Pell Grant funding to allow more students access to higher education; to provide funds to preserve open space in urban and suburban communities; and to give tax credits to employers who pay the salaries of their employees who are called up to active duty in the Guard and Reserves.

A strong proponent of healthcare reform, his legislative efforts included reducing the cost of home health care, giving patients the dignity to be cared for in their own homes with the help of medical professionals.

McGovern voted against the initial authorization of force in Iraq in 2002, and has been among the most prominent Congressional voices on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. McGovern introduced a bipartisan, bicameral bill calling for a flexible timetable for withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan as a matter of national security and fiscal responsibility.

McGovern has also taken a leadership role in the fight against hunger at home and abroad, successfully expanding the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, which helps alleviate child hunger and poverty by providing nutritious meals to children in schools in the world’s poorest countries.

1. Is Jim thinking of running? This is the first I've heard of this, and I first met him nearly 30
years ago when he was Rep. Moakley's AA.

He'd truly make an excellent President, but I doubt he's planning to primary Obama.

8. I don't know if he's thinking of running, but he seems like someone the Democratic Wing
of the Democratic Party should encourage to run.

2. Should pigs consider growing wings and taking flight?
About as relevant of a question.

The president will have no credible primary challenger.

7. He better hope you're right
Because I will vote for anyone but Obama in a Democratic Primary and I will not vote for him in the General Election. He lost me back in December, leaving me with exactly one Democrat I can vote for on the National Ticket, and he isn't worth a half a bowl of shit either.

3. Yes! Please!. McGovern, McCarthy, McDougal. Someone from...
... the DEM wing of the party should step forward. *Anybody*.

McCallister, McDonald, Mick Jagger. Frances McDormand. St. Francis of Assisi. Francis the Talking Mule.

ANY - BODY is better than NO - BODY.

10. Why? Wouldn't his candidacy help bring liberal ideas into the national conversation?

9. One problem: he may not be in step with current party leaders who want a "meaner" government.

Will this be a problem for him?
