White House meeting today on debt: Will the republicans show up? They really want the default

to happen. IMO, they really do not care about the world wide market crashes that would occur because they could blame the President.

The threat of default is about the last card they have.

And it has been their plan all along to destroy Obama by destroying the economy.

4. Yep. The president is damned if he cuts SS or Medicare. He's

also damned if he lets the debt ceiling collapse. The republicans KNOW that they have him over a barrel so they are quite willing to let Obama default and cause economic catastrophy. Who do I blame? I blame voters and non-voters.

3. Just my take...

The Republican leadership don't want it to happen because their biggest donors will be hurt by it. However, they can not convince their Tea party subgroup and zero tax subgroup, who really believe that the U.S. is just one big family and all that needs to happen is the kids get jobs slinging burgers while the adults work an extra job.

Having committed themselves to a course, and being unable to get it passed without the Democrats, they have recourse but to try and force the White House into concessions that their party will vote for. They are a bottleneck that will keep anything they don't approve from passing.

They seem to feel that Obama and Democrats will be hurt worst by a collapse of the economy, and looking at past elections during high unemployment and recession they have evidence on their side. Obama is playing like Republicans will be hardest hit by their failure to raise the debt ceiling.

We, the people who will be hurt the most because most of of us here do not have reserves to carry us through the disaster, are screwed until we get angry enough to take to the streets and demand the government do its job.

5. The republican base will not abide the GOP voting to increase the debt ceiling, no matter

what the deal is. Even cutting the budget in half. They are crazed. It will be a feather in the cap for Boehner if the country defaults- the teabaggers will love him more.

they now must live of the proceeds.

Their whole message of smaller government, lower taxes on the wealthy, and obsequeous support of big bussiness has clashed with reality. I don't think they can disengage with their message, and we all will pay for it.

9. It isn't just their donors. Eric Cantor is short Treasuries.

If we default, he cashes in.

No clue as to why that is allowed.

12. As a member of the investor class, he is doing with his money what investors are supposed to do.

He is breaking no law. He is breaking no ethics rule. He is just doing something slimy.

If there are no laws broken, and no ethics rules fractured, and no sex with underage girls or strippers in his car, the media doesn't care. He is doing what is expected of rich people, investing his money to make more money.

I work for Wall Street and by FINRA regulation, can't even maintain a minor investment account outside of my own firm for fear that I may be holding positions that may be contra to those of our clients.
