Marijuana Legalization Question Again Tops Obama Twitter Townhall

“Would you consider legalizing marijuana to increase revenue and save tax dollars by freeing up crowded prisons, court rooms?” was retweeted 4911 times, according to the analytics service. A question about letting the Bush tax cuts expire came in second place, with only 1800 retweets.

Although marijuana legalization was an overwhelmingly popular question with Twitter users, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who moderated the online town hall, focused on questions pertaining to the economy, education and space exploration.

“#AskObama why they will answer Rep. Boehner’s question, but won’t talk about #CannabisJobs! Legalize it, start a new job creating industry,” the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws complained in tweet, which was itself retweeted more than 100 times.”

1. Good
I like how this issue keeps surfacing here and there. It will take time, but hopefully we'll see some movement on this within the next 10 years or so. Not that I think legalizing it will solve very many problems, but it's still the right thing to do and more and more people are agreeing with that every day.

2. Too many people are making big bucks off the criminalization of marijuana, hence
those heaping up the money don't want it legalized. Having crime in this country, lots of laws, lots of ridiculous crap is highly profitable to some, and some of those wield a lot of power.

3. That's true, but that's also a small percentage of people
Not a whole lot of people profit from marijuana being illegal. Most people who oppose legalization are just regular folks who don't think people (especially their own kids) should be doing drugs. Those with a financial stake in the game won't be changing their minds, but everybody else isn't so constrained. Things are moving slowly, but they are moving in the right direction.

5. Nice of the corporate media (twitter) to filter out those pesky gotcha questions.

7. It was the #1 question under the "Other" section when he did a similar thing on Youtube
just about every question in the "other" category if you wanted to post a question (i guess it was last year sometime) that Obama would then answer on youtube was about marijuana legalization. I have a friend who is about to go to jail over pot - it's crazy - yet Obama REFUSES to do anything about it or even address it. wow how much i wish we had a different leader. :(

8. I remember that

Truth is, our leaders aren't yet ready to come out in favor of this (Ron Paul notwithstanding). The dam will break eventually though and my guess is that debt will be reason. We're already hearing murmurs about cutting SS . . . if that starts to look more likely you're going to hear fevered calls for more revenue from people who care a lot more about their own benefits than they do about potheads. Not that the revenue from pot would make much of a dent in our overall budget problems, but we're starting to get to the point where every penny is going to count because core benefits might soon be on the chopping block.

You already have a core of liberals and libertarians who support this. I think circumstances are pushing many others into their arms.
