The current hoopla over the risk of brain cancer that cell phones might pose is almost comical. Not because it's silly; the threat is real and calls for more empirical evidence. It's laughable because of all the other carcinogenic or other health threats out there to which we pay so little attention.

Take, for example, air pollution. Ample evidence exists about the effects of short- and long-term exposure to filthy air, yet we do little to curb harmful emissions, clean up industrial waste, or to take seriously the kind of global climate changes that affect pollution.

Studies in Germany, Scotland and Mexico have revealed that people who breath in traffic fumes regularly have a higher chance of getting hardening of the arteries and that high levels of polluted air reduces lung function and growth in children. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that about two million premature deaths occur annually because of air pollution in cities across the world.

Physicians also recognize the increased likelihood of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular problems from air pollution. Researchers suggest that living in a major city for an appreciable amount of time can place people at higher risk for cancer than if they lived in the radioactive zone near Chernobyl.

1. Beware the Mutant Nuclear Turds (R) floating through America's Heartland
Edited on Mon Jun-27-11 09:34 AM by SpiralHawk
With the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant spitting and sputtering and oozing its poisonous nuclear radiation into the Missouri River just above Omaha, and the overwhelmed Omaha sewage system dumping 6 million gallons of raw sewage a day into the River, along wioth the inestimable ag effuluvia of GMO crops and Roundup herbicide from thousands of acres of flooded farm fields, everyone downstream on the Missouri and the Mississippi (and eventually the Gulf of Mexico) can anticipate a long stanky summer of MUTANT NUCLEAR TURDS (R) floating through the Heartland.

3. Total BS: "we do little to curb harmful emissions"
She writes the whole op ed as one big logical fallacy -- encouraging us to 'laugh' about cell phone related cancers because there are many other risks that we allegedly do nothing about.

What I find "laughable", "comical" and "silly" is her lack of research, logic and balance. She ignores all the clean air and water laws which have been enacted. The removal of lead from gasoline, the introduction of hybrid buses, hybrid cars, solar power, natural gas, bio diesel and the entire worldwide environmental movement don't exist in her silly little argument.

Seriously: Cell phone use correlates with higher incidences of cancers in the brain, ear and back of the throat. Experts recommend a wired ear piece to overcome the risk.

4. All These Modern Risks, Yet We Live Longer, Healtheir Lives
It's amazing with all the things that cause instant cancerous death these days that the population of developed nations continues to live longer, healtheir lives with each passing generation...

5. Like pickles and the trade of carpentry
both of which present precisely the same cancer risk as cell phones. It's not almost silly, it's all the way there and beyond.
