About the Catholic Church and same sex marriage.......
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 09:50 AM by hedgehog
So my daughter who is active in Church affairs reads an interview in which her state senator says he is going to vote against the bill allowing same sex marriage in New York State because it conflicts with his catholic upbringing.

She contacts the Sisters she knows, and a bunch of them go down to Albany to talk to the man;

and, well,

"In a showdown vote in the State Senate, which only two years ago handily rejected same-sex marriage, the measure passed, 33-29, when two Republican senators — including Buffalo freshman Sen. Mark Grisanti — switched long-held opposition to support in a dramatic Friday night session to give the bill two more votes than needed in the 62-member chamber."

3. From the article...
"Marriage has always been, is now and always will be the union of one man and one woman in lifelong, life-giving union. Government does not have the authority to change this most basic of truths," the New York State Catholic Conference said in a statement.

Well, if government can't change this "basic truth", then what is the Catholic Conference so worried about?

8. Just one problem.....
That marriage has always been a lifelong union of one man and one woman fails the 'basic truth' test on one key point. It isn't true!

It wasn't true in Old Testament times, when marriage was a union between one man, and as many women as that man claimed God told him to have.

Lifelong? Even today in the Catholic Church, with enough money, you can get a marriage that has lasted years and produced children 'annulled'.

I am convinced that the problem the churches have with same sex marriage, is that it takes control of who and who not may be married out of their control. It's not about morality, it's about power.

4. So, is the rep she talked to one who voted yes?

If so then you should spell that out. As it is there is on direct correlation between the Sisters actions and the vote mentioned in your post.

5. Nuns have gotten upiity since they kicked the habit
and most of them turned from Gorgons into very nice women.

The church needs to dump the male hierarchy and listen to what the nuns have to say.

6. Most nuns have more sense than the hierarchy, period.
They have a better sense of justice, what is right, and a better grasp of what it means to actually LIVE the Gospels -- mainly because they live and work in the REAL world, as opposed to the insular, black-and-white, closed-minded world of the hierarchy.

7. I was taught by some nice nuns, and some not so nice nuns (and one monster)

They are people like everyone else, I don't think generalizing is very enlightening.

9. Goes against HIS upbringing???
Wow. I thought the people representing us were supposed to be representing us...not voting according to their own prejudices...

10. The point of the post is to point out that while Timothy Dolan thinks
he speaks for every Catholic in New York, the truth is he doesn't!

(Guy's from Wisconsin anyways, what does he know about New York!)

11. I just have to wonder
why a young woman with such a good head on her shoulders still supports this medieval institution.

It's like trying to be an astronaut while still maintaining your membership in the Flat Earth Society.

14. Again, the point of the post is to point out that Catholics come in a lot of
different flavors. We've been cursed with living in interesting times. More and more I'm hearing whispers of schism. I think we will soon see Roman Catholics and Protestant Catholics. One group will go around excommunicating everybody while the other group will go out and get things done.

17. One more schism
Yeah, that will make things better. Same beliefs in mumbo-jumbo, just kinder and gentler.

They tend to be very liberal and very devoted to issues of social justice!
