I'm so unemployable I'm getting rejection letters for jobs I didn't apply to!
A couple of months ago I applied to two openings at a college in California; jobs for which I was eminently qualified. They were both in the same department.

Well, I received two rejection letters. I shrugged it off (it's not the first time) and went back to looking for the next prospect. Well, a week ago I received a third letter from the college informing me I was no longer in the running for a third position in a different department! A position I never applied to!

Okay! Okay! Don't rub it in! I got the message with the first two letters!

What a revolting situation!

(I wonder how many more rejection letters I'm going to received from this college?)

1. Well look at it this way...
...it probably means your resumé was passed along to another department, possibly by someone who recognized your qualifications and thought you deserved a shot at a job other than the one you applied to. Here's hoping you get another surprise letter, asking you to come in for an interview for another job you never applied for. :-)

8. Thanks!
I like the way you think! :hi:

But it's a bit of a leap from Fine Arts to Psychology!

29. Not really such a big leap from Fine Arts to Psychology
Art Therapy needs people who actually know something about art, most psych's don't have that background.

11. That's how I took it, too.
Where I work we get a lot of applications from people who are looking for the advertised position, but if their strengths are in a different area the application will be passed along - if somebody is applying for an education position, but their resume screams 'collections' or 'research' and we know there's an opening, it deserves to be seen by someone who can make better use of them.

13. I pass resumes along all the time.
If I don't have a slot but I think the person might fit in somewhere else.

It is possible that the 3rd person you mention received your resume that way, and was sending you a thanks (but no), forgetting that the source was a colleague and not you.

Still, some one probably thought you might fit in a related area ... better than a punch in the face.

20. It's extremely unlikely that an academic department would pass a resume on
to another academic department. Unless we're talking about a staff job.

It's far more likely a glitch in the electronic application system.

26. Not necessarily...
...certainly if it is an academic job such as a professor, you're right. But many jobs in academic institutions are staff positions of various sorts, that's what I had in mind when replying.

2. I've been getting those too
A headerhunter in a different part of the country got my resume off Monster and has been applying me for jobs I don't even want or am not qualified for.

5. Maybe it's good they're considering your resume for other positions.
But adding another rejection letter to the pile is just cruel. Sorry, KansDem.

7. I agree with the above, be complimented
because they think you have talent they might be able to use somewhere in the near future and are passing your resume around.

And don't be too shocked if it gets to a place you never realized existed, let alone applied for.

I say this as a lowly RN who got calls from headhunters all over the country.

10. When I applied at the local univ. I was informed, though I can't
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 02:24 PM by Lionessa
remember how I was informed, that once an application is submitted, it will be available for consideration by all depts of the univ. Same with city or state jobs. Once the resume/app is in, it's available to be searched, even if you didn't sign up for a specific job. Even if you're hired for one position in the org., you may still get offers and rejections as your resume/app isn't deleted.

14. Wasn't that an old bit from Peanuts? Woodstock gets a rejection letter
(or maybe it was Charlie Brown?) that said "Dear sir, we will not be considering your manuscript for publication. And please note: We have enclosed a SECOND letter of rejection on the chance you submit another manuscript"

15. Today A Recruiter Asked Me For The Names Of.....
anyone i might have known from when I worked an IT contract gig at our local utility company.

BEFORE he ever mentioned the gig he was calling me about.

Then he wanted to know what consulting firms I was talking to and what companies I had interviewed with.

So he would know who his competition was.

He never did tell me the details of the gig he was calling me for.

16. They might have dropped your resume in a hopper and the other department was considering you -
Many companies do this - you send your resume out for one job, and it's also put in the database for other managers to look at if you would be a good fit for one of their jobs.
A decade and a half ago, I recieved a job offer from a different division of a company I applied when looking at a totally different type of job they had advertised for in the paper. Much better paying one, too.

19. At least they are holding your resume and checking it against available jobs
I just got a job that I applied for several years ago. A lot of places don't throw out resumes from people who are eminently qualified.

21. A few months back I got a rejection letter for a job I'd applied to three years before.
I like to think it's because I was a close contender ;-) but I suspect its just the universe saving up the sucker punches for when I'm really down.
