Cracked exposes some of the worst corporate products in your grocery store.
After reading this article I know why we call them Banana Republics. Seriously, fuck Dole. Enjoy: http://www.cracked.com/article_15967_the-awful-truth-behind-5-items-probably-your-grocery-list.html

1. Cavendish bananas are awful no matter which weasel is selling them
If you want to taste what bananas are supposed to taste like, avoid the big yellow papier mache jobs and find an ethnic grocery that carries varietal bananas from Central America and Asia. The colors of the fruit range from a bluish grey through taxicab yellow and into bright pink. They're anywhere from 3 to 5 inches long, small but they pack such a punch you won't miss the big bland Cavendish jobs.

You'll never slice those horrible things into your cereal again. You'll go to that weird neighborhood to that store where nobody speaks English once a week to get the real thing, instead.

Trust me on this one.

5. It's damn near impossible to find non-Cavendish bananas
I live near a small town and have seen the smaller, reddish bananas ONCE. And they were expensive.

I think we should all ask our grocers to source some other varieties that are more genetically varied and sustainable. Cavendishes are so overbred that they can't even reproduce.

9. Aren't Cavendish bananas headed for extinction?
I believe I heard/read that somewhere.

You are spot-on about the other bananas, Warpy. We have some markets here that carry them.

17. There's a blight that's affecting the plants
If it continues unabated then the Cavendish will become extinct. There's some efforts to engineer and/or breed a blight-resistant strain.

3. This is a really depressing article for Cracked.
What is more depressing is that these five companies are only the tip of the iceberg. I have a feeling that most large corporations have horrid skeletons. But it is a start to avoid products from these companies, and letting them know why.

6. And the fact that
even when people learn about these products and companies, they still buy the stuff.

7. Too true. But I am one who does pay attention to the horrors
of some corporations, and I can have a one-person boycott of them for my own sanity. I do realize that it is next to impossible to get most people behind anything, which is sad. And getting me back to a company that I personally boycott is really hard to do. Mind like an elephant. I still don't go to Burger King for some reason that is lost to me but was some time in the 1980's. You just get out of the habit of even considering those companies.

Sadly, I am not much of a consumer. My money doesn't amount to enough to hurt them at all. Or...am I not much of a consumer because I don't patronize too many products/companies?

8. I had a feeling you were

But you don't need a specific reason to boycott Burger King. Just the fact that it's Burger King is more than enough.
