6. Should the average worker be held to a higher standard than a member of Congress?
Note that I really don't believe that what Wiener did was all that serious at this point.

To me, the most serious problem was the lying.

27. +10,000,000 Americans who would face the same consequence for ..
representing their company in such a disgusting manner, and then lying to their bosses about it for a week.

Let's get this straight, American Democratic voters: Anthony Weiner had a wonderful political philosophy and was an excellent legislator on the floor of the House of Representatives. But he cannot simply check into a rehab facility as if he didn't openly and knowingly lie about his actions, (out of shame and remorse and an conscious wish to hide his actions) and then just go on like nothing happened, all is forgiven, he can do whatever he wants and we will continue to pay him because he IS who he IS!!!

That's not the American way, that's the way of the power brokers playing with a stacked deck in their favor, be it Vitter or Weiner, I, at least, don't condone nor excuse either one. They both need to meet up with the real world of equal treatment. They should be treated like anyone else would be treated, anyone else who pays their salary.

32. You must not be very crucial to the operation.
I'm sure if you were, say, the only guy who knew how to operate the nuclear reactor, they would find a way to forgive you.

37. Nobody is that crucial, actually...
Except the owner of a very small company. And he can pretty much do whatever he wants to, anyway, as long as it's legal.

If there's only one guy who knows how to operate the nuclear reactor (for example), that's really a scary state of affairs, don't you think?.

What if something unforeseen happens to him?

What do they do...forbid him from leaving his home for fear he might get hit by a bus? He could choke to death on his dinner. Or have a heart attack.

I think there's a particular arrogance (and danger) in thinking one is irreplaceable in the company hierarchy.

Especially in this shitty economy.

43. Actually you mentioned the crucial need
for ONE person who is so important to the operation that he could never be fired no matter what he did. And that point is what I responded to.

That has nothing to do with "People running the nuclear reactors who have it totally under control".

If a whole squadron of people can't keep things under control, then it's pretty clear that ONE person isn't that crucial and could be fired without apparent ill effect to the operations.

Which was my point. There is no ONE person who is so important he can't be fired.

I know people like to think they're indispensable on an individual basis, but the truth is, the business can survive without them.

Edited on Sun Jun-12-11 08:21 PM by Warren DeMontague
No, no one is completely indispensable, generally. Some are more indispensable than others, to be sure. And not everyone has an employer who would give a shit if they tweeted pictures of themselves nude or in boxers.

It's funny, though, about that 'no one is indispensable' line... I used to live in Marin, and I knew a bunch of people who worked for ILM. I remember, back in the day, while they were working on one of the early big CGI deals, one of the big Computer Graphics poo-bahs got busted by Lucas's police for smoking a joint at the Lucas Ranch. In Lucas's office, no less. Lucas apparently fired him on the spot.

Then he discovered that they couldn't do any of the shit they were trying to do without this guy, and apparently Lucas had to call him up and hire him back the next day.

Maybe now more people know how to do computer animation, surely. But in that one case, that guy was indispensable.

None of which, really, is all that relevant to the Weiner situation. My bottom line is, unless he broke a law, it's between him and his wife. I'm just not feelin' the outrage.
