Weiner won't resign. Polls support his decision.
The was posted in a Dkos election diary this morning.

Anthony Weiner tells the New York Post he's not resigning, and it turns out, his constituents don't want him to, either. After a couple of pretty useless city-wide polls came out (showing favorable numbers for Weiner), NY1 and Marist finally released a survey (PDF) of voters who actually live in the 9th CD. By a 56-33 margin, they want him to stay in office.

2. I wouldn't resign either, and I would keep hammering at Clarence Thomas
Don't give them what they want. Even though I think he really damaged himself.

12. In the short term, he did.
However, he's been an extremely effective Congressman and his refusal to cave to scum like Breitbart will eventually add to his prestige, not detract from it.

Besides, I do love seeing all the pearl clutchers going around with faces like cats' asses when they don't get their way.

Eventually, people are going to have to come to terms with the fact that there is a divide between personal life and public life, that being stupid in some sexual matter is the human condition and doesn't reflect on one's ability to do a job.

17. If he used his public work resources to engage in sexting- HE crossed that line himself.
And while I enjoy hearing Weiner talk trash about Republicans and appreciate his votes, as far as legislation goes he isn't all that effective.

politicians lie like hell, about things far far worse.

4. Funny, I just saw an ad on DU saying "Diane gooch, new jersey" wants people to sign a petition for
him to resign

A republican for Jersey want him to resign?

F**K them!!!

The only group that has a right to decide that is Weiner's constituents, everyone else, worry about your own state

10. You never know, Charlie Sheen may have a new stunt up his sleeve.
There's an attractive blonde girl recently missing, so we don't know what will develop there, and Donald Trump is always a wild card. Some nut may walk into a mall with a Kalashnikov or an earthquake may unfortunately devastate a near Eastern country.

David Vitter didn't fade into the woodwork because a nation forgave him, it was because a new shiny object caught the media's eye.

11. The Democrat's 'Exhibitionist' Congressman ...
... shows just how inclusive the party is, I suppose.

What a disgrace this guy is, regardless of what his constituents say now -- he should get out of the House of Representatives for his own sake and for the sake of his party.

25. So sex is a sin to you? But not the prurient, despicable, obsession
of the peeping toms who were peering through his virtual window for months hoping to destroy yet another Democrat?

Do you approve of people spying on others when they are engaged in sexual activity, photographing them, and then using that as a political tool?

What was 'disgraceful' about what he did? Engaging in cyber sex? If so, we have an awful lot of disgraceful people in this country. Maybe we should make it illegal? The far right would like to do that, all sex made illegal except the missionary position and only after marriage.

Andrew Breitbart is now the moral arbiter of not just the Republican Party, but Democrats as well?

No thanks, my outrage is reserved for the perpetrators who spied on and pried into the personal sex life of a public figure. I find that to be far more disgraceful than adults engaging in cyber sex.

31. How is 'Twittering' private?
Weiner's "virtual window" was wide open in my analysis ... anyone who happened to look in therefore was not 'spying'. In other words, Weiner was sending out an invitation to low-lifes like Breitbart to take a look.

Bottom line here is that Anthony Weiner is either too stupid or too sick to continue as a representative of the people.

Sorry, but when any person posts on FB or Twitter they should have no expectation of privacy.

Furthermore, I don't think Weiner's problem is so much about sex, cyber or otherwise -- but about some compulsion for engaging in risky, self-destructive behavior.

I've said it before: he needs professional help.

36. There is a private messenging system on twitter, just like here.
He did NOT post on the main feed to those women, he DM'd them. So, no you would not see his private correspondence with them by going to his twitter page. What you saw was his public feed which you could have been following for the past year and known nothing about those private exchanges.

If that were the case, we would not have had to wait for Breitbart to tell us about it. Any of his probably thousands of followers would have broadcast it.

14. There is currently a zero tolerance under Boehner and he's used it. He should go...
so we can have credible conversations. Nothing will be heard...now that the real photo has come out. Are they so protected and removed, they actually believe they can go on a public domain and post a pic like that? Clinton may have come to the rescue with a Jennifer Flowers media blitz, but it's not working. Have you heard any of the other news lately? Obama refused the 24 hr. peroid to appear before congress regarding the war authorization they had a resolution vote. This procedure was done AFTER HE ignored informal questions submitted. Now, I see his "cabinet" says it is okay to assassinate Gahdafi???????????

Hello dems?????? It is our job to push back our government when we don't agree. We are not suppose to be silent. It's not helping.

Ann Coulter blathering on about it.

I hope he stays on, for no other reason than to piss those two off.

21. Glad to hear it...
...it's never a good idea to kowtow to the likes of Andrew Breitbart, for one thing. For another thing, Weiner's transgressions, while embarrassing, are really not that great. Oh, sure, we may get a distasteful view of his sex life. We may find him a lot less likeable than before. But that fades with time, especially if he straightens up from here on out, which I for one hope he is able to do.

In the meantime we need a strong progressive voice in Congress, and he is certainly that. Yes he has weakened his own voice for the time being. The thing to do now is put his head down and get to work on repairing the damage, and advocating for his constituents. They are the ultimate arbiters of his behavior, and are free to not elect him or even primary him if they so desire. Congress people only serve 2-year terms, so they don't have to wait too long to voice their approval / disapproval anyway.

29. I'm not surprised. Ordinary people are far more sensible about
these things than the DC politicos who live in a bubble and appear to shudder in fear when Andrew Breitbart points a moralistic finger in their direction. And as for the media, nearly everyone I know in RL is thoroughly disgusted by the witch hunt on the media over someone engaging in cyber sex.

It's the same thing that happened with Clinton. In the end, the public, always ahead of the political 'experts' and the 'media', decided that what he did, stupid as it was, did not compare to the disgraceful behavior of the media and the witch hunters.

Wish I had taken the bet someone offered me yesterday, that NYers would not lose their cool over the sight of a penis and would end up supporting him.
