On My High Basic Expectations of Legislators
Edited on Thu Jun-09-11 01:59 PM by MineralMan
Despite my willingness to see the country governed in accordance with our Constitutions, both state and federal, which sometimes means I must accept legislation that does not match my ideals, I have some serious expectations of legislators. Here are some of those expectations. They are my ideals, and have nothing to do with the political beliefs of the legislators, but with other things:

1. Education - I believe legislators should have a good grounding in history and a good knowledge of our system of government.
2. Intelligence - A legislator should be above average in native intelligence and should demonstrate that intelligence when communicating.
3. Logic - An understanding of basic rules of logic should be a qualification for any legislative position.
4. Judgment - A legislator should always display good judgment in his affairs, both public and private. Evidence to the contrary causes me to question his/her abilities to exercise good judgment in legislation.
5. Ethics - Every legislator should display a knowledge of and adherence to an ethical standard that is appropriate for his or her society.
6. Discretion - With the knowledge that most humans have various foibles and personal eccentricities, I expect such things to not be prominent in a legislator's life.
7. Forthrightness - Dissembling is not a virtue in a legislator. When asked a direct question, even if an embarrassing one, I expect a forthright answer.

I can respect any legislator with these qualities, even if I disagree with that legislator's position on particular issues. I do not expect everyone to agree with me regarding the ideals under which society should operate. I do expect legislators of my own party to agree with me on the majority of issues, but serious lapses in the characteristics described above will still cause me to reject that legislator in future elections, in favor of a candidate who meets those standards.

Mostly I'm just sick of these scandals. If a pol can't keep it
Zipped then at least don't tweet his penis to random people. How difficult can that possibly be?
