Many people are saying that it wasn't what Weiner DID that disgusts them, but rather that he lied about it. So please help me understand what that lie actually WAS.

It couldn't be that the photos were not of him, because he never said that. I distinctly remember him saying: 'like many guys, I have 'fooled around' with my camera, so I'm not saying the photo WASN'T me.'

So, was the lie that he said he never tweeted these photos when it turns out he did? Or was it his (lame) attempts to defuse the story in hopes it would go away? Or was it that he did not immediately come clean and tell the whole sordid story as soon as Breitbart broke it?

Once that lie is precisely identified, I can decide for myself if it was sufficiently dastardly to justify calling for him to resign.
