Michele Bachmann Said What!?

Sometime this month, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is expected to travel to Waterloo, Iowa to officially announce her presidential candidacy. Her odds, while firmly in Hail Mary territory, are still better than you might think: With Republicans less than thrilled with the primary field, Bachmann stands at least a fighter's chance in socially conservative states like Iowa and South Carolina.

<snip>

Here's an incomplete guide to Bachmann's greatest hits:
2001: In a letter she co-wrote for the Minnesota-based Maple River Education Coalition, Bachmann warns that President Bush's education policies are leading the nation down the path to communism: "Government is implementing policies that will lead to poverty, not prosperity, by adopting the failed ideas of a state-planned and managed economy similar to that of the former Soviet Union."

<snip>

2008: Just two weeks before election day, Bachmann calls for an investigation into the anti-American ambitions of Barack Obama and congressional Democrats: "What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."

<snip>

2009: Bachmann goes on Glenn Beck's Fox program to discuss the specter of "One World currency" and delivers what historians may later dub her "I am not a kook!" speech. "Glenn, I have experienced that throughout my political career being labeled a kook. It just happened again in a big story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. But all we have to do is point to the treasury secretary on tape, on camera. This is not Michele Bachmann being a kook. This is our treasury secretary on tape and on camera." A visibly confused Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner had told Bachmann he was not aware of any plan to replace the dollar.

So many more laughs at the link::rofl:

3. ". . . throughout my political career being labeled a kook."

I mean, if they label you a kook two or three times, you might not be a kook. But throughout your career? Doesn't the preponderance of evidence (not to mention the fantastical things you actually say) tend to suggest that you are, in fact, a kook?

That having been said, every day this pack of drooling goniffs stays in the race is a plus for Barack Obama. I know we'll see the Bachmanns and the Palins and the Santorums drop one by one -- presuming the sane leaders of the Republican party can prevail -- but until they're down to a few sane ones (I'm thinking Romney and Pawlenty, regardless of how odious they are) -- we get to revel in the freak show.

8. I think the opposite will happen.
I think the Pawlentys and Romneys will drop out after finding out their base is too crazy to breathe on their own, leaving only the goofiest worthless, nutjob, psychopaths.

9. And one assumes, especially since most Americans are not . . .
Goofy, nutjobs, or psychopaths, that such candidates (at the local and state levels as well) would be unelectable.

I've thought for some time that the teabagger contingent might suck all of the brains and balls out of the 'Lican party, leaving a large contingent of sane right-of-center people without a party to call their own.

We could be seeing that now.

11. More Bachmann gems re. health care, finance reform, cap-and-trade, globalization ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Bachmann

Bachmann supports the teaching of intelligent design in public school science classes.

Bachmann opposes minimum wage increases. Bachmann supports increased domestic drilling of oil and natural gas, as well as pursuing renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar, and is a strong proponent of nuclear power.

Bachmann has called for phasing out of Social Security and Medicare:

In a discussion about the G-20 summit in Toronto, during an interview with conservative radio host Scott Hennen, Bachmann stated that she does not want America to be part of the international global economy.

Bachmann supports both a federal and state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and any legal equivalents.

Bachmann has characterized the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as "ObamaCare", and has continually called for its repeal.

Bachmann introduced legislation to repeal the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.

...regarding Obama's proposed cap and trade tax policy to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Bachmann said she wanted Minnesotans "armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back."
