Police looking into arrests of dancing protesters
Police looking into arrests of dancing protesters
By The Associated Press

The U.S. Park Police is investigating whether its officers were too aggressive in arresting five demonstrators who were dancing in protest over the weekend at the Jefferson Memorial.

Five dancing protesters were arrested on Saturday afternoon. (File photo: Tracy A. Woodward - The Washington Post) Videos that have surfaced online show the officers forcefully arresting the protesters on Saturday afternoon. One officer is seen in the videos with his hands around a protester’s throat.

The protesters were challenging a recent federal appeals court decision that upheld a ban on dancing inside the memorial.

Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said Monday that concerns have been raised about the actions of some of the officers, and the chief has directed the Office of Professional Responsibility to conduct an investigation. Schlosser says the protesters were arrested for demonstrating without a permit.

2. "This land is your land, this land is my land."
Fooled you.

This land truly belongs to the Commander in Chief of the war machine.

3. Yep, the total joke is on "we the people." That, in my lifetime, has flown
out the window along with democracy.

4. Not quite -- it belongs to the war machine itself
Commanders in chief come and go, but the military-industrial complex goes on forever.

9. JFK's assassination made the point that CiCs are dispensable
This is not to claim anything about who actually killed Kennedy -- but I believe the mere fact of his death has made all presidents since then acutely aware that their survival depends on maintaining the good will of forces outside themself.

10. Politicians come and go and are often showcasing for the masses, but the
real power and wealth remain in the background.

5. What in the hell
has our nation of liberty come to when there is such a thing as "Demonstrating without a Permit", yet Westboro Baptist Church members can show up at funerals with impunity, and in many cases, win lawsuits?

The disconnect boggles my damn mind.

11. Yeah, I have trouble wrapping my head around it too. The absurd gets a
free pass and those IMO pleasantly trying to make a statement get thrown to the ground and accosted like they were some kind of domestic terrorists. The policing and laws IMO are going overboard in the US. The country really needs to lighten up.

There is also a cop who put his hands around one of the dancer's necks.
