Typhoon touches down in tsunami zone
Ishinomaki, Japan - The first major storm of the season has touched down in the tsunami zone, causing significant flooding and some damage in areas still reeling from the earthquake and tsunami.

Flooding has been the worst in the city of Ishinomaki, where the earthquake lowered the overall elevation by nearly 3 feet.

Workers have sprayed the damaged reactors with "anti-scattering" agents, but TEPCO has said the
plant is not properly prepared for the storm. So far today, contaminated water levels in the turbine buildings of 3 reactors have all gone up.

No word on any of that water spilling into the ocean - yet.

Anyone have any further information on the typhoon arriving at Japans damaged nuclear reactors? I just feel like things are really going to escalate on the spread on radiation.

2. Well, isn't this the start of tropical cyclone season?
Expect the next 4-5 months to be very hard on the Japanese people. I feel so sad that they have to endure so much.

3. Yes it is
I hope the reactor shells hold but seriously doubt they can survive the season.

Some gusty winds, occasional heavy rain, but no significant damage.

7. By the time typhoons get to the Tokyo area
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 07:08 AM by Art_from_Ark
they are usually just windy rainstorms. The worst ones are usually in Okinawa and the island of Kyushu (although the absolute worst one in the post-war era hit the Nagoya area). If they cross over to the Sea of Japan, though, they can regain strength and moisture, which is what apparently happened with this latest typhoon that hit the Ishimaki area.
