No vaginas please, we're Floridian
Edited on Fri May-27-11 10:47 PM by steve2470

A theatre in Florida had to change the title of a charity production of The Vagina Monologues on its marquee, after a woman complained that it was offensive.

The new name? They decided on 'The Hoohaa Monologues'.

Then, they had to change it back after the play's producers said that the lack of offense was offensive.

Atlantic Theatres in Atlantic Beach, Florida, received a complaint from a woman who'd seen the advertised title as she drove past with her niece. She said that it had made her niece ask her what a vagina was.

eta, My bad, this is a 2007 story: http://www.news4jax.com/entertainment/10948346/detail.html (POSTED: Tuesday, February 6, 2007)

criticize local or cultural differences.

17. I've always heard it referred to
as "hoohoo" also.

And "hoo-ha" I always thought was something like a big brouhaha.

Ex: "When the chimps escaped from their cages, it caused a big hoo-ha in the zoo".

I wish people would get their euphemisms straight...we hardly know what to call offensive body parts anymore.

11. Exactly. It's the clinical term for a part of the anatomy!
Would the controlling old biddy been offended by the word ear or navel or knee?

Her victorian attitude is indicative of someone obsessed with sex........

13. Watch your language!
This isn't a French bordello; please use appropriate decorum when discussing those parts. Honestly, I can't believe I just read those three words.

E**, nav*l, k***...truly shocking.

16. White meat or dark? To some idiots ONLY euphenisms are acceptable.
Even thighs are dangerously close to the "gates of hell".

Navels are defintitely naughty and knees are as high as any "decent" woman's legs ever go.

15. i think that about sums it up.... women's body parts seem to be considererd offensive.
if there was a sign that said the penis monologues would there be complaints? i wonder. which makes me wonder why words relating to women are not supposed to be said. Maybe that is one of the reasons for the name of the show.

20. I have a feeling this idiot would have complained even if it was the The Penis Monologues
It doesn't seem like it's a "oh, women parts are dirty", but more of the "private parts in general are dirty".

I'm amazed that this person obviously feels her niece should live a life of ignorance and not know what her body parts are called.

27. This story is just a metaphor for what is wrong with this entire country
We cater to the opinions of idiots. One idiot flails hysterically about something of little consequence, and the rest of us are just expected to do everything in our power to cater to their hysterical idiot opinion.

The proper response would have been, "Nobody gives a rat's hoohaa that you had to explain the word 'vagina' to your niece. Little children need to know what their body parts are called, and frankly it's ridiculous that she didn't already know. Furthermore, you may need more hobbies in your life, you prudish old bat. Goodbye."

Instead, they gave the prudish old bat a soapbox and catered to her foolishness.

This kind of ridiculous crap happens every day in this country (e.g., the opinions of hysterical screamers yapping about the 'War on Christmas' being given any sort of weight in the news whatsoever; Donald 'Comb-Over' Trump being given actual airtime to talk about his political opinions; endless discussions about Harold 'Rapture-Man' Camping, etc.) It needs to stop.

30. Sad. Especially since a large 'point' of the play is about celebrations of women's bodies.
That reaction is really, really sad.
