What being pro-life means in America
To be pro-life in the US today, which is to be conservative in almost all cases, is to love thy enemy by supporting illegal wars - or just plain stupid ones - that kill hundreds of thousands of innocents, cutting health-care benefits and nutrition programs for children and the poor, and turning the other cheek … of the person you're torturing.

It is also to cut funding for bridges that are falling down to make room for slashing the tax on yacht shoes, make a best faith effort to ensure criminals, the mentally unbalanced and terrorists have access to assault weapons and explosives, and to love thy neighbour - to love them so much as to give him or her a lethal injection if you think they killed someone.

1. It's not "pro-life" it's "anti-choice"...
Therein lies the confusion.

2. I don't buy into "package deal" theories
I believe that a majority of Americans pick and choose their positions Chinese restaurant style: One from Column A, two from Column B, choice of won-ton or hot and sour soup, with five or more you get free egg roll.

3. yeah but some are single issue voters
All they really care about is column A, so they take whatever side items are paired with it.

6. Perhaps I haven't made my point clear
The OP suggests that anti-abortion voters are prone to be pro-war and opposed to social programs like feeding the poor. I say that's bunk. I personally know people who oppose abortion on religious or moral grounds, and oppose war and support the social safety net for humanitarian reasons.

If you try to predict an individual's position on one issue based solely on his or her position on another, you will find that you are wrong a lot of the time. But you have to be willing to listen to people to detect the nuances in their views. Sometimes you have to ask questions. The OP's way of looking at things is to make a broad assumption that everyone who is opposed to abortion can be assumed to hold some cluster of views on other issues. That works sometimes, but in my experience it's not a very useful way of predicting who will agree with your view on other matters.

I'd say that someone who assumes that all anti-abortion people are also pro-war and against Medicare, etc. is the real single-issue thinker.

12. The OP does NOT say that anti-abortion voters are prone to be pro-war, etc....
The OP means to say that those ONE-ISSUE voters end
up SUPPORTING REGIMES that are pro-war and anti-people.

And it is the truth.

14. It says that being pro-life means that in most cases you are conservative and therefore support...
...illegal wars "that kill hundreds of thousands of innocents, cutting health-care benefits and nutrition programs for children and the poor, and turning the other cheek … of the person you're torturing."

It says nothing about regimes, and it's bullshit as is your reply.

4. They aren't pro-life, they are simply pro-fetus
What happens (or not) as far as any necessary or required after-birth medical care or treatment for these infants, sans the mothers' health insurance, cash, and/or credit, is of absolutely no concern whatsoever to them.

7. Pro-Life: A fetus must be protected at all costs until it is born - then it becomes a Welfare cheat.
At least that's the GOP version of "pro-life".

10. Classic Ben Sargent cartoon.

Politician putting hand on pregnant woman's tummy. CAPTION: SACRED UNBORN LIFE

Politician pointing at snot-nosed brat of poor woman. CAPTION: SNIVELING LITTLE WELFARE CHEAT

The cost of a delivery is many thousands of dollars, and a C-section costs more than that, since that is major abdominal surgery. But they don;t want to pay it, they don't want to adopt any unwanted children, especially those who are disabled or handicapped.

They act like pregnancy is a picnic, not a danger to the woman's health in many cases.

13. Kill the health insurance for pregnant women and just give them a VOUCHER for $50 toward birth.
Hell, be generous and throw in a $1 off coupon for Dairy Queen.

9. Pro-Life means under no circumstance shall a woman have an abortion
Period, end of report. If you question this, you are unChristian and unAmerican.
They cherish every single life on planet earth...no wait, only in America because they support the corporations who outsource manufacturing offshore where forced abortions take place regularly...that is ok with these pro-lifers.

You have every right to be born in america(small "a" due to the lady's diminished stature in the world)and Pro-Lifers will demagogue this everystep of the way then discard their "firmly-held biblical belief' when they want to execute someone by electrocution, hanging, firing squad or lethal injectin. Yes, they are pro-life all right.
