11. But it's okay for us to use all the insults we've launched at Republicans?
"Caribou Barbie" is pretty sexist, but who's whining about that? Not to mention all the beauty pageant jokes, like the one Tina Fey did on SNL.

When you insult someone, it's traditional to make it gender-appropriate. That's why you call a man a dick (see: Dick Cheney) and a woman a bitch or a c-word. Other insults, like asshole, are used for both genders.

Now, if Ed had said that Laura doesn't deserve her job because she's a woman, that would be sexist. But lobbing a gender-appropriate insult toward someone isn't. He would have sounded pretty stupid if he had called her a prick.

38. Caribou Barbie is not sexist because there is no power differential
between me and Palin and I didn't insult women as a class. Ditto for Tina's pageant jokes. Both describe Palin trading on her appearance. They weren't a response to a policy position.

Maybe some of you need to figure out what "sexism" means.

It's precisely that wimpy liberal crap that has made us Dems spineless victims. The Republicans come out swinging, you have to fight back just as hard.

Indeed, the conservatives can barely get a word in edgewise for all the liberals talking over them all the time.

32. I like Amy Goodman but that "professional, cut & dry" style isn't for everybody. We need a voice

with charisma thats entertaining as well. Rachel is a good balance I think. Cenk, Ed, and Tweety are a bit heavy on the theatrics.

I don't understand progressives' compulsion to kneecap our own.

He apologized. Which is more than I would have done. He's still a Democrat, who kicks ass on labor issues, and FSM knows we're behind the 8-ball on the labor & union fronts.

We cannot afford to eat our own.

I don't care who he is or who he was talking to, that kind of behavior is unacceptable. We demand better from the kids at McDonalds.

35. He would have been fired from my company immediately
I just finished my two hour internet course on sexual harrassment that my company made and make us all go through. The CEO left no doubt that were I to do what Ed did, I'd be gone before the day was over.

8. Calling someone a slut is not okay....
even if you disagree with her.

It's a gendered slur and should be treated as such. I'd say a short suspension is appropriate, because, as a woman, I am sick of hearing gendered slurs all the time. I am sick of being called a slut when I don't meet someone's standards for appropriate femininity. You don't know what that word, or any other slur entails until it's been used to hurt you.

It's not the worst thing he could have done, but it's still decidedly not okay.

18. I'm a woman, but I don't whine about insults
In fact, I love them, because it's good feedback to tell me if I'm kicking ass in an argument, etc. It's very predictable:

- When a man is first threatened by you, he calls you a bitch.

- When a man feels he's losing to you, he calls you a slut.

- When a man calls you a lesbian, you know you've won, because he's so beaten that he feels that it's a last resort to cut you down. That's usually the point at which he walks away, and you can smile, knowing that you've completely castrated him.

If you're "hurt" by words that men use when you're making them feel helpless, you need to develop a thicker skin. Seriously, I'm not flaming, just stating a fact. :)

34. All well and good, but
it's sort of...I don't know...unkind, maybe...to tell someone who is upset by vile insults to "develop a thicker skin".

It's verbal abuse, plain and simple.

Would you justify a little bit of physical abuse the same way?

If a man is first threatened by you, he gives you a little shove...

When a man feels he's losing to you, he pulls your hair...

And when a man punches you in the face, you know you've won because he's using his last resort to beat you down...

There are women out there who think this sort of thing is OK. Perfectly normal.

What if one of them said to you, if you are so hurt by it, you need a thicker skin?

15. He should be made to read Mrs. Byrne's little book
of unusual, obscure and preposterous words of the English language.

I think a week of after school detentions doing that
would arm him with enough words to deal with those
moments when accumulated angst aggravates impulse
and emotion begs for a colorful pejorative.

19. A fat raise and an extra hour of air time daily
Ed Schultz has figured out what few other Democratic/liberal broadcasters have - the American public is so fucking dumb that name calling is the only way to get through to them.

The republicans discovered a long time ago that there are not only no negative consequences to calling someone racist sexist and homophobic names, there are a lot of benefits. Nobody will censor them for saying the most vile things about the President and they will rile up a lot of stupid people who think those vile things are true.

And it isn't a matter of "lowering ourselves to their level", the people we are trying to reach are already at that level. They will gladly give up the meager benefits they receive from the social safety net, just because they agree with the right wing babblers that we shouldn't have a n-word in the white house or that Democrats and liberals are pussies who should be killed.
