By the time my children were in the fourth, fifth grades, they had a very good basic knowledge of how our government works. Today one republican stated he of course, would keep his government health insurance because it was "free." This guy was serious. C'mon, nothing is free, we all learn that at an early age. When asked about a school "free" lunch, it was explained that taxpayers actually buy the lunch. It's all so basic. "Right of Return" (re Palestine/Israel) is a pretty easy concept, yet a republican candidate hopeful appeared dumbfounded by the question. I still think Wallace was purposely trying to trip him up, but still.
"Palestinian right of return From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Palestinian right of return (Arabic: حق العودة, Ḥaqq al-ʿawda; Hebrew: זכות השיבה, zkhut hashivah) is a political position or principle asserting that Palestinian refugees, both first-generation refugees and their descendants, have a right to return, and a right to the property they or their forebears left or which they were forced to leave in the former British Mandate of Palestine (currently Israel and Palestinian territories), as part of the 1948 Palestinian exodus, a result of the 1948 Palestine War and due to the 1967 Six-Day war."
Took six seconds to produce that, and of course there is so much more. The party of "let's take money from education so the corporations won't be taxed higher" show their true lack of civics education and how our government works. I tell ya, it's damned scary. Cain, again, not understanding the distinction between the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Let us not go down the road of Palin and Bachmann, it's frightening. One of my teachers, Mrs. Henry wouldn't promote us to the next grade if we didn't know that one.
We need to really hammer home how their lack of really basic stuff is dangerous for the country. Not just the candidates mind you, but ones already in office. It's appalling. One of the numerous reasons the President of the United States is so admired....He studied, he earned, he learned and articulates to the delight of the British ear, that of an educated man. He can be trusted in the sense...he's not uneducated. Our President is cultured. As the President spoke today in the UK I fleetingly thought of a Palin, a Bachmann, a Cain or even a Romney or one of the rest of them, speaking to another nation so smoothly, so easily. He was "in charge" and confident because he knew what he was doing, knew his history and the facts. He knows the basics, he's known them from probably the third grade or so. I doubt there will be another invitation from the House of Lords and House of Commons to a US President for a very long time. At least not from the current crop of Republicans wanting to serve in this Office..
