Dioxins found at Camp Carroll: U.S.

As Korea and the U.S. begin to investigate whether Agent Orange was buried at Camp Carroll in 1978, an American general has confirmed that records show chemicals being buried in the area that year.

According to a statement released yesterday by John D. Johnson, commanding general of the 8th U.S. Army in Korea, an environmental assessment report written by U.S. Army engineers in 1992 shows that a large number of drums of herbicides, pesticides and solvents were buried at Camp Carroll in 1978.

The report goes on to state that in 1979 and 1980, the drums were dug up and moved to another location, along with 40 tons of earth.

Johnson said in his statement that the report doesn’t say whether the chemicals were Agent Orange or other defoliants. Nor does it say why the drums were buried and how they were eventually disposed of.
