Man wins Lottery, still on foodstamps. The parallel with Big Oil...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_localdtw/20110518/ts_yblog_localdtw/2m-michigan-lottery-winner-defends-use-of-food-stamps

I find this story HILARIOUS. People are FURIOUS at this man. Republicans are angry. And... yet they defend giving the oil companies their huge tax breaks and subsidies.

The hypocrisy of the right knows NO bounds.

1. The comments!
This makes me mad, as my daughter and family of four can't get help they are 2.00 above the poverty line. Give me a break. This guy has no cons
cious at all. There are people out there that don't have 2cents to buy food and he has millions an on FOOD STAMPS.What is wrong with this country?

So you mean to tell me the man has money and yet still feels the need to collect food stamps. How sad and sickening is that. He should be made to pay back the money he took from other families who need it more than he does. It's a shame the government feels they cannot do a thing about it. The man should feel guilty and want to give back to those less fortunate. How selfish!!!

This is the epitome of the entitlement society. Even if you have enough money you feel owed. We need someone to go into the department of government that is in charge of this and make big changes. Obviously this is an abuse of the system and it was not intended for a person with his kind of money.

I'll bet if you substitute "man" with "oil companies" and "food stamps" with "subsidies," they'll shut up!

2. Things changed? I got denied because my sons had their paper route earnings in savings..
$100 and $83, I could not believe it in 1985. I had borrowed one months bills hoping I could go back to work (but MS, Lyme Disease and three other permanent debilitating conditions and it was not going to happen). Luckily I had family we could reluctantly hit up one more time.

I know that they changed it so that if you get rental assistance Section 8 etc most folks get $11 a month now and it requires paperwork every month which probably costs about $250 a month to manage so most in my building do not bother unless they are on medication that puts them over their donut hole or are not eligible for SS or SSI.

3. I'm certainly not "furious" but I do think it is a shitty thing to do
He should give up his food card, or perhaps buy some food for others less lucky.

5. Reagan would tell us
that this is what ALL people on food stamps do, that all food stamp recipients have won the lottery. He'd then use that "evidence" to gut programs for the poor. Reagan may be long gone, but rest assured that his devotees will be applying the tactic. Convenient how a single isolated case becomes the norm for them. Convenient and fucking shameful.

6. Slightly off topic, but
further down in the article it says that Michigan "had closed a loophole that allowed college students to receive Food Stamps" They made it sound like a good thing. My question is why? What is wrong w/college students receiving food stamps if they need it?

(Of course, I'm assuming these students are not able to afford the dorm and meal rates and are not just some rich kids there on their parent's dime) -Not a lot of info to go on, but dorm room and meal costs can be very high for a struggling college student. I say let them have food stamps if they need it.

9. Republicans are angry?
Democrats are angry. At least this one is. If you are not angry at someone ripping off a program for those in need you are probably in the wrong party.
