Jail time handed down to body snatchers (corpse of former Cypriot president)
CONVICTED murderer and rapist Antonis Prokopiou Kitas, his brother, and an Indian man yesterday received jail sentences of up to 20 months for stealing the remains of former president Tassos Papadopoulos in 2009.

The Nicosia Criminal Court sentenced Kitas, alias Al Capone, and his brother Mamas to 20 months in prison while Sarbjit Singh, 32, was handed an 18-month prison term.

Kitas, 45, along with his 49-year-old brother and Singh, 32, were found guilty in April of stealing Papadopoulos’ remains on December 11, 2009.

They were found guilty of conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour, illegal entry to a burial ground and exhuming a body without a court order.

The body was recovered some three months later, buried in a graveyard not far from the original burial ground in Deftera.

In its verdict, the court said Kitas had asked his brother to steal the body in the hope of negotiating a shorter prison term by ‘helping’ authorities track down the remains.
