OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Gov. Chris Gregoire says she will allow state universities to raise tuition rates, arguing that the option is necessary in order to maintain quality.
Lawmakers approved a bill Tuesday giving institutions power to set tuition rates starting in the coming academic year. Gregoire said soon after the bill's passage that she will approve the measure.
Tuition has already seen double-digit increases in each of the last two years, and lawmakers are budgeting for similar jumps in the coming two years. By the end of Gregoire's second term, tuition will have doubled from when she took office in 2005.
Gregoire says the bill is necessary to maintain quality and keeping doors open at the state's universities. The measure also includes increased financial aid for middle-class families.
