3. Oops, an advertisement was in the way. I thought this was about Fearless Leader Bush.
What was hiding behind the advertisement? BTW, I wasn't able to vote either. And I've got no problem with Chavez.

I was hoping it was a Bush bashing thread.

I'll move along now. Well, not yet.

7. It isn't even very good flame bait because our constitution
doesn't allow for rule by decree.

11. Why change my OP? It's accurate. Congress can change the constitution.
And about the pie, it's ok. I never liked fascism pie anyways.

20. Yes, if 2/3rds of Congress
and 3/4ths of the state legislatures agree. That's a pretty high bar to go over for such a drastic change.

What constitutional challenges did Chavez have to meet, other than intimidating a single legislature?

12. But Congress can make a law to permit a wide range of executive powers, right?
And every POTUS can issue an Executive Order which seems like a decree to me.

The Constitution itself is a sort of decree, if you get my drift.

The more informed members can jump in and correct me anytime.

6. So it really is about Chavez?
I was wondering...

Since they've cut off diplomatic relations with the USA, some claim that would increase tensions. But why would that be?

Just go to your separate corners and quit poking at each other for a while. I'm sure I'm missing the big picture here. Wanna tune me in?

Or somebody tell me when I can leave this benighted planet. I must have made a wrong turn on my way from the Pleiades.

Peace and love everyone!

17. Venezuela didn't cut off ties with the US that I know of, anyway.
They rejected the administration's choice of ambassadors.

21. Since Congress, in accordance with the Constitution, can not give him that power...
the Constitution would be in abeyance and he would be a dictator.
