Dems angered by scheduling of voter ID vote next week

I have no doubt the Repug Walker poodles chairs scheduled this important vote to nix the Dems input-no doubt at all.

Dems angered by scheduling of voter ID vote next week

Assembly Co-chair Robin Vos said the JFC will hold an executive session on the budget next Thursday, but not on Tuesday.

The Assembly will be in session on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The committee will meet at 2 p.m. Monday for an executive session on the voter ID bill.

Rep. Tamara Grigsby and Sen. Lena Taylor, both Milwaukee Dems, were outraged by the announcement. They said they have scheduling conflicts on Mondays that were made clear to the chairs and were told by the chairs to keep Tuesdays and Thursdays open for meetings.

They said they felt the meeting was scheduled Monday to keep them from being able to voice their concerns on the bill.

"We're talking about a voter ID bill that is the most restrictive ... if it passes in the nation," Grigsby said.

Vos said the meeting is for a bill referred to the committee, not a budget exec.......................

1. It beats me how people get along in life without a picture ID
Voting is the least of the things you need it for.

2. For one thing, the address has to be current.
Poorer people often change addresses and may not want to pay to update their IDs each time. What about people who had to move back home for a few months because they lost a job? With the current law, all you have to do is show a letter with your current address on it. What about students with their home addresses on their DLs? Colleges don't put addresses on IDs because students are always moving around. What are you supposed to do, get a new DL every time you move to a new campus residence? What about people in transitional housing? What about people who just like to minimize their contacts with authority figures?

This bill will disproportionately disenfranchise certain segments of the population that tend to vote overwhelmingly Democratic.

3. We've had to show our ID for as long as I can remember and we are a blue state.

4. That's as it may be. The effect here will be to disenfranchise
a lot of traditionally Democratic-voting people.

5. This bill is just not the photo ID. It severely restricts the residency
to 28 days and restricts sending in your ballot via mail.

13. Hmm looks like they are copying us if anything.
Registration deadline July 12 for August 11 primary. October 8, for November 6 general.

Its funny but a lot of the stuff people get mad about we are already there.

6. Absentee voting...
Anyone in college, or changing addresses frequently....is required to show some form of photo ID to enroll or rent.

My vote is one of the most valued rights I have. I want to insure it isn't cancelled out by one cast which shouldn't be.

Doesn't it make sense for these elected representatives to be available to tend to their constituents interests, whenever that is? What could be more important to a legislator....than legislation?

7. Only 8 cases of actual voter fraud were found in the last WI election.

10. 8 votes versus Florida 2000?
Versus Ohio 2004?

Voter fraud is minuscule. Electoral fraud is wholesale.

11. It's actually quite easy to get along without a photo ID. I do have a passport, but only use it for
travel purposes. Birth Certificate and SS card are more than enough to get by on.

12. I'd be OK with that.

Don't have a photo ID...fine. Show these instead.

(Might run into a snag trying to vote....if you don't live where you were born.)
