DADT repeal is working as planned

By Steve Benen

About a month ago, Andrew Sullivan asked, Now that DADT is over, can the hysterics who warned it would destroy the military concede they were wrong?

That would be nice. They were, after all, making all kinds of dire predictions, all of which have turned out to be baseless. One military leader in particular preferred to keep Dont Ask, Dont Tell in place, but now concedes that the post-repeal system is working just fine.

Gen. James F. Amos, the top officer in the U.S. Marines, says he is pleased at how smoothly the military branch has adapted to the repeal of dont ask, dont tell and top gay rights advocates agree.

Amos, who had publicly opposed the repeal of the ban on gays serving openly in the military, spent the past week in Afghanistan holding more than a dozen town-hall meetings with Marines, reports the AP, which had an exclusive interview with the Marine commander.

Not once during the sessions was he asked about the repeal, according to the wire service.

Im very pleased with how it has gone, Amos said.

For Amos to be gracious about this after opposing the presidents policy only helps reinforce how mistaken Republican warnings were.

Thomas Ricks recently noted a major on active duty who raised a similar point.

At what point in time should journalists, bloggers, etc hold those who made wildly inaccurate predications on the lifting of the ban accountable? All the retired generals and officers (LTG Mixon, Merrill A. McPeak and Col. Dave Bedey for example) who predicted that soldiers would leave the military by the thousands, or John McCain and other politicians describing how it would affect us as a fighting force?

At some point I feel that the public should be reminded of their predictions so the next time they make predictions that are way off the mark, fewer people will give them credence.

Some degree of accountability would be a refreshing change of pace, wouldnt it?

Granted, the official end of DADT only happened a few months ago, and I suppose its still possible that God will punish the United States for this transgression with a series of meteors, but its not too soon to say the rights anti-gay critics, led in large part by John McCain, had no idea what they were talking about. The dire predictions that said thousands of active-duty soldiers would quit the armed forces and recruiting would become nearly impossible were, we now know, entirely wrong.

11. What's with the moving goalposts...
DOMA is still on the list and in the works. He already went around DOMA on many issues. DADT was important and the President is aware DOMA is AS important and I believe he will take care of it... When he's able. We know very well he can't do anything with this congress and Senate or w/ the last one in regards to DOMA. He's not the only one running the show. Maybe if we had a "fierce advocate" in you pushing for Liberal Congressmen and Women as well as senators...then Obama can get DOMA out of the way.

2. For a lot of people, even before DADT, it just wasn't an issue.
If you liked the work the person was doing, you didn't give a shit about their private life.

Anyone--regardless of their inclinations--who brought their private life and personal dramas into the operational environment was a pain in the ass.

If you can do your job on duty, go on and enjoy yourself as you see fit off duty. Nobody's business but yours, at the end of the day.

8. ALL the Right Wing loonies who have made dumb predictions about EVERYTHING,
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 08:51 PM by tblue37
for just about forever, are STILL the ones who are booked on "serious" TV news and discussion shows, and STILL considered "wise" and "very serious" people. Meanwhile, all the DFHs (Dirty F***ing Hippies) who have been 100% right about about everything, just about forever, are still viewed as the "lunatic fringe," and they are still not invited to apepar on "serious" news and discussions shows.

There will be no accountability, and the DFHs will still be considered the lunatic fringe on this and other issues, even though the DFHs are demonstrably right and the Right Wing loonies are demonstrably wrong.

12. Gays serving openly in the military
Gay marriage
Marijuana legalization
Concealed-carry permits
Raising the MPG requirement.

All things that were/are stalled for years or decades because of an intensive and sustained fear campaign that, when finally implemented, nobody seems to notice.
