President under water in N.Y.
President Barack Obama's approval rating is under water in blue state New York, 45 percent to 49 percent, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

It's a massive swing from June, when the numbers were 57 percent positive and 38 percent negative.

Obama would still beat a generic Republican opponent, the poll found. But the numbers do suggest an erosion, at least in the short term and after the debt ceiling fight.

UPDATE: It's the first time, Halperin notes, that the president has ever gotten a negative number in the Empire State. And the trend is clear in other recent polling in the state.

3. Um
"And the trend is clear in other recent polling in the state."

No: Obama Lands First Negative Approval Score in New York in Quinnipiac Poll

<...>

Voters split 48 percent to 46 percent over whether he deserves reelection. This in a state that Obama won with 63 percent of the vote three years ago. Still, he has managed to hold onto a lead over a generic Republican, with 49 percent saying they would vote for him to 34 percent for the GOP candidate.

“The debt-ceiling hullaballoo devastated President Barack Obama’s numbers even in true-blue New York,” said Quinnipiac Poll Director Maurice Carroll.

6. One also
has to wonder if this is the result of a more conservative sample.

<...>

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand gets a 49 - 27 percent approval rating, down from her all- time high 54 - 22 percent approval rating June 29.

August 11, 2011 - New York Voters Back Fracking, Despite Concerns, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; More Women In Government Means Fewer Sex Scandals

By a 47 - 42 percent margin, New York State voters like the economic benefits of drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale more than they fear possible environmental concerns, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Support for drilling is 51 - 39 percent among upstate voters and 52 - 35 percent among suburban voters. New York City voters are opposed 50 - 38 percent. Support is 67 - 20 percent among Republicans, while independent voters are divided 47 - 45 percent. Democrats are opposed 52 - 35 percent.

New York State voters believe 75 - 17 percent that natural gas drilling will create jobs, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds, with strong support among all groups and in all regions of the state.

While many voters know little about hydro-fracking, voters believe 52 - 15 percent that this process will damage the environment, with 33 percent undecided. All groups feel this way.

I guess this is a recent development at Quinnipiac.

14. Upstate NY is an economic wasteland that has been ignored by Albany for decades
Fracking is supported because the economic situation is that bleak up here. Upstate cities have been losing population for decades, lots of abandoned buildings and other signs of decay that don't exactly inspire confidence. Little to no effort on the part of State government to do anything about it, since NYC completely dominates state politics.

So the locals are quite willing to annihilate the environment if it means jobs.

17. I'm hearing more and more discontent from life long
Democrats. The wars, the tax cuts and the proposed 'grand bargain' are all contributing.

Yes, NY is typically blue but I'll never forget my shock when we went for Reagan in 1980.
