Republicans and music - a long history of bad choices and rejection

Tom Petty apparently is sueing to stop Bachmann from using "American Girl" (a song about hating small town life and sadness about lost love)

Reagan tried to use songs by both Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp - both emphatically demanded that he stop. At the time we had little idea of how ironic those two artists were for a Republican to choose. The songs were "Born in the USA" and "Little Pink Houses" - clearly no one actually listened to the songs.

Bob Dole tried to change "Soul Man" to "Dole Man" - Sam & Dave (or at least the publishing rights holders) quickly asked him to stop.

Palin tried to use "Barracuda" for a while in 2008 - The Wilson sisters (Heart) IMMEDIATELY demanded that she stop.

Then McCain tried to use "Running on Empty" (the title alone was telling) and Jackson Browne not only demanded that he stop he pursued litigation against McCain for a while.

1. Have they ever thought of, you know, asking?
It would save them from a lot of embarrassment. Unless this is all part of their grievance politics playbook and they *want* the artists to issue cease and desist orders in order to show how real, heartland American values are under constant attack from those godless liberals in the entertainment industry. Either way, using these songs without permission does rather give the lie to the idea that Republicans are the natural protectors of property rights.

2. Republicans hate everything liberal--except their music apparently.
Why can't GOP politicians find music they want to use by right wingers? Just look at who they can choose from:

Alice Cooper
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ted Nugent
LeAnn Rimes
Alabama
Hank Williams
Kenny Chesney
Sammy Hagar
Alan Jackson
Billy Ray Cyrus
Charlie Daniels
Frankie Avalon
Gretchen Wilson
John Rich
Lee Ann Womack
Lee Greenwood
Martina McBride
Meat Loaf
Michael W. Smith
Amy Grant
Naomi Judd
Randy Travis
Reba McEntire
Ricky Skaggs
Sammy Kershaw
Sara Evans
Trace Adkins
Travis Tritt

With talent like that, why, why, WHY drink from the poisonous liberal well?

Got the names from this site http://www.ranker.com/list/celebrities-republican-famous-and-conservative-stars/famous-conservatives
Cannot vouch for 100% accuracy.

5. That is apparent in the lyric
or at least that is what she's thinking about. Republicans do not listen past the catch phrase.
