POLL: Israel PM should have said 'yes' to Obama
Israel PM should have said 'yes' to Obama
poll May 25, 2011 11:11 AM (Last updated: January 01, 0001 12:00 AM) Agence France Press

JERUSALEM: The majority of Israelis believe their prime minister should have supported US President Barack Obama’s outline for new peace talks with the Palestinians, according to a poll published Wednesday.

The survey, published in the Maariv newspaper, found 10 percent of Israelis thought Benjamin Netanyahu should have “declared his support for the president’s remarks with no reservations.”

Another 46.8 percent said the Israeli leader should have expressed support “but with reservations,” while 36.7 percent said Netanyahu should have declared his opposition to Obama’s principles for the peace process.

In a key speech on Middle East policy that came just before Netanyahu flew to Washington, Obama called for negotiations to resume immediately and for the borders that existed before the 1967 Middle East war to form the basis for the talks.

1. They elect a war hawk and think he's going to be a peace dove?
That's like us electing Jeb Bush thinking he's going to be progressive. These people are what they are.

3. Only Nixon can go to China, maybe?
That seemed to have been the theory behind initially supporting Sharon a decade ago, at least.

5. Netanyahu has never claimed to be anything but a hawk
Edited on Wed May-25-11 07:45 AM by lunatica
In Israel being a hawk isn't the same as it is here. There it's always been about survival. So I guess it doesn't just end to make you happy. Nor is my statement a criticism, except about the expectations of the people who voted for him. His entire life has been devoted to the aggressive safety of Israel. What do they expect of him if not what he is?

6. You might try to criticize in a different way. like more constructively.
The attacks from experts such as yourself is tiresome and DU has turned into a personal vendetta forum rather than one of shared information. Back in the old days, we got along without all the vicious expertise.

7. It's your choice to interpret what I'm saying as vendetta
I think hawks are very important in a world that wants to kill and terrorize. I think Netanyahu is doing what he feels is necessary. If I had guns pointed at me at all times I wouldn't be a peace dove either. You seem to be kneejerk ready to jump deep into anyone who dares tell a fact that you don't like. Well go for it if it makes you feel like you know so much more.

8. Apparently, you must know me well based on your analysis of my personality
Interesting that I have no idea who you are. Too bad I can't stick around for this discussion. I have a life and a job to attend to.

9. our congress (both sides) is more catholic than the pope
they love and support israel more than those silly self-hating 56.8% it's not the people who actually live in israel that matter, it's the wingnuts and dems like harry reid, anthony weiner and chuck schumer and indy lieberman who are looking out for israel and just want to avoid another holocaust, nothing to do with aipac donations. those silly self-hating 56.8% are sheep walking into the oven.

**sarcasm, obviously**

12. no it's 56.8% that think he should have done the opposite
of what he did. he didn't agree with reservations like 46.8% said he should have, he outright dismissed it.

13. Pretty worthless poll.
They only interviewed 450 people and the margin of error was 4.6% which is very high for a poll.
