Dr. West on The Ed Show..
Edited on Tue May-17-11 09:49 PM by Peacetrain
"He has some accomplishments, but I don't know how big they are" Dr. West just said on ED.

Pass the advil..

Dr. Perry coming on..

Thinks Prof West is being disingenuous.. not like the Cornel West I know and respect she said.. apparently Dr. West thinks the President does not understand the black experience because his Mother is white..

A new twist on birtherism..

3. Cornell West has ruined his credibility
He's using his academic thinking to create controversy but he's over his head and sour grapes

5. Cornell West makes some very good points.
However, Dr. Harris-Perry smacks him down with the insinuation that this matter is mostly personal to him and that their policy differences are less important. I've read some of her Melissa Harris-Perry's work, but this is the first time I've heard her live. She is wonderful.

7. I think Cornell would like to engage Obama in any way possible
so he could feel comfortable with himself and with Obama on a racial level.
That is emotional, not rational.

He's challenging him about race in most of his comments and attempting to
build a following and I find that counterproductive at best.

9. Cornell West pointed to the problems that have always been there......
The fact that Barack Obama hasn't turned it all around in 2.4 years isn't a respectable argument to make.... (especially since Cornell West has been dogging Barack Obama out since prior to the election of 2008)!

For Cornell West, whose health care is paid principally by Princeton University Administration, to say that it means nothing that 30 million more have access to health insurance (via subsidies...and many are people of color) because he only wants to look at that as meaning that insurance companies have more customers makes him out of touch and blinded by his spite.

12. Dr. Perry is 100% right! And she had the facts to back it up.
Sounds like sour grapes coming from Dr. West. I'm a big Cornel West fan. Always have been. But he and Tavis Smiley are beginning to look like plum fools. Thank God, Dr. Perry is the voice of reason...and FACTS!!!

"Obama just met w/ the Congressional Black Caucus for the first time in two and a half years" (paraphrased)

..... and most of you will remember one of my FAVORITE photos of Obama with the CBC from March of '10

19. I knew that was complete bullshit. Why do people do that? Geez, just talking out of their ass with
no clue. Just willing to assume the worst. Did someone tell him that was the first meeting? Did he assume it was because he hadn't paid attention enough to notice the previous ones?

Annoying as hell. The RW and Trump especially did/do that all the time. Just make some bogus, easily disproven claim of "fact" to slam the President - just throw it out there, don't even google it once to check. :eyes: Usually the reporters don't question it - Ed didn't.

23. I think it may have been the first meeting of THIS congress....
.... which of course started in January. Seems like I remember hearing something along those lines at the time.

Perhaps he got it confused with that? .... Or perhaps he has no clue what the term "this Congress" even means.

27. West also said
that he has no contact with the black caucus whatsoever.

Imagine that! He's doing the TV circuit going ballistic on the President and has no contact with black members of Congress.

22. While I think Prof West is wrong about this, I'm disheartened to see
so many progressives acting so dismissively toward him, including the insulting names. I posted earlier today that IMO West is a political romantic; I think there's nothing wrong with the romance of politics because lord knows I've experienced them myself. But where West wants to see radical democracy, Pres Obama knows what is actually doable. Where West wishes he had seen the President taking the populism of the tea party ethos, if not their racist politics, to help poor and working Americans, he sees a President who, he feels, has been too enabling of Wall Street and corporations.

I think all those are valid positions, but I happen to disagree with them, if only because I don't overlook the way the senate has managed to hamper so much progressive legislation that Pres Obama would have happily signed into law. That said, I also believe some of Prof West's commentary has been beyond the pale and some of it has just been factually inaccurate. I take great umbrage, for example, as West's suggestion that Pres Obama is uncomfortable around "free Black men" and that he feels more comfortable around "white brothers and Jewish brothers." But all that just proves the old point: if love is about creating an idealized other onto whom we can project our fantasies (West circa 2008), hatred, or whatever he's now feeling, is about inverting or distorting that idealization for the sake of our own ego.

25. Cornel West did that to himself.
He said extremely racialized disparaging remarks towards the President's own mother. The man was feeding into this reverse racism tactic by attacking the man's mother as a way to state Obama's removal from the trials and tribulations of Black people. That is not a valid position. Obama had worked rather hard to make the life better of ALL Americans, rather than just one racial group---since in this day and age EVERYONE in the United States is hurting--not just one.

As for using populism---he tried to do that with healthcare or did you forget how much political capital he lost on that? And he still managed to do get it for 32 million people---who were not covered initially. 32 million--but that's ignored. And for West to stand there and disingenuously state he wasn't sure what great things Obama has done shows a lack of incite.

and instead just focus on attempting to paint a "jilted lover" picture.
