Poll shows 3 percent now think Obama born abroad
Poll shows 3 percent now think Obama born abroad
By: CNN Political Unit

(CNN) - President Obama's decision to release his birth certificate appears to have satisfied all but a tiny fringe who continue to believe he was not born in America.

According to a recently released Washington Post poll, only 3 percent of Americans now believe the president was born abroad while 77 percent say he was definitely born in the United States. Nearly 20 percent have no opinion on that matter.

A similar Washington Post poll conducted a year ago found 14 percent of Americans believed the president was born in another country while 68 percent thought he was born in the United States.

Obama released his birth certificate last week, saying the controversy surrounding the issue had become a "sideshow."

The surprise release followed recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, raising doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

The poll was conducted April 28-May 1 and surveyed 1,006 Americans by telephone. It carries a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

7. She went to court on Monday, will likely be some time before a decision
http://missionviejo.patch.com/articles/orly-taitz-presses-birther-argument-in-pasadena-court

Two attorneys who remain unconvinced that President Barack Obama was born in the United States took their case to a Pasadena courtroom today, asking an appellate court panel to reinstate their lawsuit challenging his citizenship and asking for closer examination of his birth certificate.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David DeJute insisted that the courts were not the proper venue to challenge the president, saying only Congress can do so through the impeachment process.

The panel heard about an hour of arguments, then took the matter under submission.

5. That is truly surprising
I'll bet if you asked if Mitt Romney were born abroad you could get 3%.

Have to agree with the person who posted that the Osama thing had something to do with the numbers dipping.

8. And the just-above-zero to 6.5% who believe he was born elsewhere ...
probably think he is a space alien. ;-)

(Note that the sampling error of 3.5% is larger than the estimate of 3%, if they rounded correctly; but some non-zero number believe the fiction in order to amount to 3% in the poll -- and we know any way that there is Oily Taint and company.)

13. Do we dare believe that the teabaggers are only 3%.
Don't know if that's good or bad. I was counting on them splitting the republican party.

Although...when it comes down to it, they'll vote for any white guy even if he's a communist!

20. I'm a bit surprised it's that low -- I wonder if getting OBL had an effect as well
In the days immediately following the release, there seemed to be plenty of skepticism remaining. I don't know if there were polls or anything, but just from watching the news, reading various blogs, seeing comments online, etc., there seemed to be plenty of conspiracy nuts still holding out.

Even Trump, on the day it was released and a day or two after, made comments about "if it's real" or "if it can be verified." Of course, after the thrashing at the Correspondents Dinner, he would have even more absurd and pathetic with sour grapes to boot if he'd raised questions. And after Obama announced the killing of OBL, he'd look downright unpatriotic to question it.
