Michelle Obama says husband has not had a cigarette in 12 months, though US president has yet to corroborate claims

# guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 8 February 2011 19.23 GMT

President Barack Obama finally has kicked the smoking habit, Michelle Obama has revealed.

"Yes, he has," the first lady told reporters at the White House when asked whether her husband had finally done what millions of Americans cannot seem to do and quit smoking. "It's been almost a year."

She said she did not know exactly when he quit "because he never smoked a lot" and she never saw him light up.

1. Great news. Is he going to quit CEO/MIC appeasement?
Reaganomics is a hard habit to break for politicians, but your country's future . . . KIND of depends on it.

2. She doesn't know when he quit, because...
she's never seen him light up. But he hasn't had a cigarette in 12 months.

Sooo...really, that begs the question, how does she know he's quit?

4. Uhhh gee. . .
Let's see. . .

Could it possibly be that they are honest with each other.

Damn. That's almost unAmerican.

11. If they were honest with each other why doesn't she know when he quit?
According to the OP he hasn't had a cigarette in 12 months. His last physical was in March,2010 and his Dr. encouraged him to try to quit smoking meaning he was smoking at least 11 months ago.

6. Have you ever been around a smoker, even one that sneaks cigarettes?
Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 04:13 PM by lunatica
You can smell it all over them. Their hair, clothes, mouth and hands pick up the smell. You can even smell it on a non-smoker if they've been around a smoker.

7. I remember being out on the last weekend of smoking at bars in NYC
It happened to be one of the worst nights I've ever had with cigarette stink. I left that bar smelling like a used cigarette filter. It was disgusting.

8. I prefer the term Recovering smoker.....
I quit for 3 years, then fell off the wagon. I'm happy to say I'm currently going on 5 years since the setback. There are times,I still want one....:smoke:

17. Don't tell me that
5 years and you still want one? I quit 6 days ago, and was REALLY hoping the craving eventually goes away. :(

19. Thank you
For the welcome and the good wishes.

I'm using the patch. After smoking for 37 years, this is the third time I've tried to quit in the past 2½ years. I swore to myself and my family, if I ever went 24 hours without one, I wouldn't start back. I can't go back now.

I smoked my last one about 9 PM last Thursday.

Edited on Wed Feb-09-11 06:07 PM by bigwillq
Last one lasted about three months two summers ago.
Good Luck! :hi:
Any tips that you are using besides the patch?

22. Well...against the "patch rules"
I used the gum and the patch for the first 3 days. It warns you not to use both (drives the blood pressure up, I think).

I ditched the gum after day three.

21. My grandparents both quit smoking, here's what I learned from them
The "need" to have a cigarette goes away but the "want" doesn't necessarily. As one who occasionally lights up while having a beer, I can understand this. I have no physical cravings for a cigarette, but having one feels kinda nice.

23. I remember the beer days
I haven't drank in years. I would NEVER make it drinking. Beer and cigarettes just go together too well.

15. Good for him!
I hope it is true, and that he can kick the habit for good. I know how hard it is to quit. Still not there yet. I wanted to, and did, for a time. Need to get there again.

24. Frankly, I wish he'd light up and quit the Chamber of Commerce
Besides, what about all the American workers who make cigarettes?

Oh, that's right. Precious few pols give a sh*t about the WORKER --ANY WORKER -- any more.

25. A year is a long time. He's tried to quit before. This is a tough time to quit. ....
As a former smoker, I know how hard it is. Almost impossible, you could say. I hope he makes it.

Actually, I "switched" to nicotine gum. If it hadn't been for that, I'd still either be smoking or chewing tobacco.
