Twice he declined a White House invitation
i'm talking about the second in line to the Presidency.

First Time, told WH he's not going to the Tuscon service.Understandable, may have to keep him in Washington since VP Biden was also away. But excuse up front: RNC event

Hu Jintao State Dinner. Also not attending. Excuse: More flimpsy ,Mr.Hu will be visiting Congress.

4. Hu will be glad he's not there. So will Obama.
He's a graceless, drunken buffoon, and has no place at a State Dinner. The less he's seen, the more the rest of the planet won't have to pity us.

6. Actually
news reports say that all the congressional leaders are declining invitations to the dinner. What is this?

And oh Reid called Hu Jintao a dictator.Excusable?

15. Thanks!
"All three no-shows, through their aides, cited scheduling conflicts. Boehner, an Ohio Republican, and Reid, a Nevada Democrat who has called the Chinese president “a dictator,” are to meet Hu at the Capitol tomorrow."

Boehner hasn't accepted invite one from the WH, so that's a given. I'm actually surprised to see he's planning on attending the meeting earlier that day.

Hahahaha! DU funniness... Boehner gets "boner" in the spell check dictionary. Sweet!

8. Devil's advocate for a moment...
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 05:01 PM by Hippo_Tron
We're often critical of the enormous power and prestige that has been given to the office of the President. Shouldn't the leadership of a co-equal branch of government be perfectly entitled to decline an invitation from the President? Shouldn't it be no different than the Speaker inviting the President to his office on the hill and the President declining the invitation?

Yes I know that Boehner's motives have jack shit to do with executive power or prestige and I know that part of the Republican base doesn't see this President as legitimate because of his skin color. But setting that aside for a moment, maybe Boehner is setting a decent precedent for the future where that we don't see the President as so damn special that you are obligated to appear at the White House if invited.

9. Well
I've never heard of a Speaker inviting the President or Prime Minister to his side before. What would he host anyway?

21. The branches are co-equal, the individuals within them
not so much.

Each of the 535 in congress do not have the same status or power as the president

Yes, the speaker of the house is entitled to decline an invitation from the President but probably not "perfectly" entitled since it is still a breech of etiquette and tradition
