Is Obama Doing Enough To Win Over The Public?
Source: NPR

With President Obama's approval rating at a new low — 42 percent according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll — and midterm elections coming up in November, the Democrats are in a bit of a bind.

Their legislative achievements — such as the health care law, financial regulation and the economic stimulus bill — are all under attack, and Democrats up for re-election are distancing themselves from the party.

Obama and the Democratic Party are not getting across their message that government can be a force for good, and this is leading some to say they have lost control of the national narrative.

The November election will answer this question.

5. A leader will convince others to follow him... then go there.
I don't think the president does enough of that.

9. Yeah, well said! Never underestimate many American voters to vote against
their own best interests... We are a country of national stupidity. Often I've said US = United Stupidity.

10. No, and I'll never understand why. He's a compelling public
speaker, as evidenced by his campaign but in terms of relating to the public he comes across as diatant and professorial. Unfortunately these are not qualities greatly prized by the electorate, particularly the low information voters who are the most guaranteed to turn up at the polls this November. I always hated the "guy you'd like to have a beer with" schtick that Bush managed to pull off, but it was effective.

11. Pat Buchanan, that you?
It's pretty remarkable DU employs Republican talking points.

What a fucking joke.

Pres. Obama has given speeches, he's worked town halls, he's held rallies and yet he's still not doing enough to change public perception.

Fucking bullshit.

Only fools and Republican jackasses would say such a thing.

even the economic one with serious questions and criticisms. He relates just fine, and commands a lot of respect in the 'real world'.

15. It's shocking so many on DU think Obama should be able to do it all.
Pres. Obama is one man. He can't make people vote Democratic across the board. No president can.

Even Clinton, who many agree is very personable and likable, failed at convincing Americans in 1994 to vote Democratic.

The thing is, Pres. Obama isn't running on the ticket in any of these races. If he were, Democrats would be doing better than they are currently. I'd wager Pres. Obama is probably more popular in every state than most Democratic candidates.

So he can only do so much. I believe Pres. Obama's recent campaign events HAVE paid off to an extent. Democrats have gained far more momentum lately then they held in the summer.

But the candidates actually have to, you know, campaign. In the end, it's about them versus the Republicans. Not Obama versus the Republicans.

17. I hate to be mean
but some people are just not to bright and don't understand how politics work and have not been paying attention over the years. What President Obama is going through,(voters disillusioned by the incumbent party) many previous presidents have gone through as well, rather they be dems or rethugs. Obama, has accomplished more in two years than any president in history. Unfortunately, the pendulum has swung in the rethugs direction. However, trust and believe it will swing right back towards the dems when Americans see how little the rethugs will accomplish once some of them get in, in Nov. This all(rethugs winning some seats) might very well work to Obama's advantage in 2012. We shall see.

22. Oh, and don't get me going in the "if he runs in 2012" crap
Why would he NOT run with the level of accomplishments that other Presidents didn't rack up?

The willful ignorance is strong and disturbing on these boards.

24. Because it's more important that Dems criticize the Dem President when
he strays from party ideals.

Banding together as a group to oppose Republicans would be marching in lockstep. Can't do that!

:eyes:

With reasoning like that, people can piss and moan about ideals all day while the Republicans default their way back to power and dismantle what's been done. Apparently that's what it'll take to remind some that Republicans are actually worse. Unbelievable.

23. I think he should go down to the Gulf Coast again and go swimming.
It will boost his ratings down there, most importantly, in Florida. Also, Democrats need to build up the kind of overwhelming "gender gap" we tend to have when we win. No better way I can think of right now to win the Shootout at Gender Gap than to inundate the media with shirtless Obama. That man has serious pecs.
