Wexler will endorse Crist on Sunday
Wexler will endorse Crist on Sunday
by Jane Musgrave | September 25th, 2010

Former U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, the darling of Democratic Jewish retirees, on Sunday will endorse Gov. Charlie Crist in his independent run for the U.S. Senate, the governor’s campaign announced today.

Confirming rumors that began swirling this week, officials said the former seven-term Democratic Congressman from Boca Raton will endorse Crist during stops in voter-rich retirement communities in western Boca Raton and Tamarac.

“He’s a strong and respected leader in South Florida and he shares many of the same values as Charlie Crist,” said Danny Kanner, the governor’s campaign press secretary. “It’s a major boost for us.”

Since bolting from the GOP in March when it became clear he couldn’t beat Republican Marco Rubio, Crist has been courting moderate and liberal voters. To win the three-way race, he needs to woo them from Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek.

There was not a more loyal, outspoken, and stalwart Democrat than Wexler during the Gingrich and Hastert Congress. He was those Congress' Alan Grayson.

He is endorsing Crist because he can count.

90. If Meek dropped out, he'd be making sure that the Florida Democratic Party would never recover
No major party in this country was ever competitive in its state again after having a U.S. Senate nominee drop out.

It would send the message that Florida Dems no longer have any structural integrity.

And a Crist victory couldn't be something for progressive to celebrate. It's meaningless to be a right-winger with a center-right winger.

92. The fact that Crist has made no significant gains in the polls disproves that.
There's no more reason to think that the right-wing independent is more electable than the Democrat.

Besides, Crist would be doing this no matter WHO the Dems had nominated. He'd be doing it if you'd nominated Grayson, as far as that goes.

74. SAME HERE! And I Have NOW Made Up My Mind! I'm Going With
Crist! I've posted here before than many of my Democratic friends have told me THEY had already made up their minds to vote for Crist, but I was still on the fence! NO LONGER!

I too have lived here since 1971, and I don't think Meek is a viable candidate! As a Democrat, I have always voted Democrat, but MEEK IS WEAK and he still polls behind Crist! So, unless we want to let the Tea-Bagger Darling get elected, we probably have no other choice. And I campaigned against Crist when he ran for Governor and I wasn't that crazy about the Democratic opponent at the time!

Time is very short and Meek doesn't have the numbers, and no matter how you twist it, he's not gaining in any way!

Also, and I've said this before many times, Crist (no matter his faults) has governed more moderately than many Democrats thought he would! I may be wrong, but with Wexler coming out in support of him, Meek just may be toast!

Too many Democrats here in Florida actually FEAR Rubio as a Senator and will do almost anything to ruin his bid!! It's something that's being said all over the state. Personally, it might be best if the BIG HONCHOS would stay away because they will almost insure a RUBIO win by propping up Meek!

JMHO! And I'm NOT ALONE!

appeared to do well during the oil spill, and has been friendly with Obama, not only being seen with him quite a few times, but not running away from him. He also looks so rational compared to Rubio (to the point he left his party) and he is quite moderate. He is very high-profile, unlike Meek.

I feel bad for Meek, because I used to love watching him and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and one other guy (who was also young) talking in the House back-and-forth. I think they went by the name of, "The Under-40 Caucus. It was always good to watch those 3.

He'll be in the wilderness. There won't be any races open for him in the future. And the argument will always be made against him "why SHOULD we ever nominate you again when you didn't stay in the LAST race we nominated you for?"

Besides, the fact that Crist hasn't already pulled ahead of Rubio proves that he can't. Independents never win come-from-behind races.

The Florida Democratic Party would be permanently crippled if it didn't have a Senate candidate this year. It couldn't recover.

"And there's no meaningful differences between Crist and Rubio."

Nope, none at all except

-Crist supported the stimulus. Rubio opposed it

-Crist supports civil unions. Rubio opposes them.

-Crist is nominally pro choice. Rubio is anti-choice

-Jeb Bush hates Crist. Marco Rubio was groomed by the Bush machine.

The die has been cast. Rubio will probably win. This reminds me of the 94 TX gubernatorial race when we could have ended George W. Bush's political career. When Rubio wins it will propel him into the national spotlight. Too bad we didn't stop him when we could. A Rubio win will be huge for him and the Bush machine.

As Mao said "before you speak;investigate". Respectfully, maybe you should investigate Sunshine State politics before you opine wildly on them.

Oh, thanks for giving us Governor Palin. Now you are giving us Senator Rubio.

If he drops out his career is over and I doubt Meek wins anyway. Meek on the other hand could make alot of friends in Florida and elsewhere by dropping out.. that would most likely give the election to Crist. Meek could single-handely defeat Rubio and at the same time keeps his job in the House of Reps. But who knows.. politics is a crazy business.. and exspecially crazy this year.

104. Meek is the Democratic candidate. If he drops out, the Democrats will be left with NO
candidate. That would be a PR nightmare. Meek would become a joke for the Republicans, an example whenever they wanted to show the party as ineffectual. He'd be the media's whipping boy. Do you really think the party leaders want to engage in that kind of damage control at this stage of the game? I also don't see Meek "making a lot of friends" quite the contrary, his career would be over. What future would he have after quitting? OTOH Crist quitting won't affect any party. The consequences wouldn't be as dire. He could be offered some some deal, a position which he could hold for a while. Crist is older, and has already accomplished a lot. Meek is still a young man, he will give it all to get his shot at doing something. He won't kill his career at this stage.

What a mess...what a mess...

Rubio is in. There's nothing anyone can do about it now. Too many people are distrustful of Crist.

42. I think it's "The Devil You Know".
I really wish the Dems could have fielded a better candidate than Meek. I year ago, I was convinced Wasserman-Schultz was setting herself up for a run.

This is the seat that Mel Martinez won in 2004. He only beat Betty Castor by less than a point. It was ripe for the taking, and nobody wanted to take it.

And Meek has voters like myself. Independents who are looking for a new face.

While Crist is better than Rubio, the dynamic of the GOP these days is that it does not matter whether you have a moderate GOP or not. They all vote what their boss tells them.

Obama carried Florida. It would be an uphill race for any Democrat in FL in this political and economic environment.

Plus FL is 1/3 D, 1/3 R and 1/3 Indy so Democrats have no built in advantage here.

12. So do you endorse the man who stood next to Mooselini
doing the 'drill, baby, drill' chant during 2008? I guess Palin wasn't really so bad, you can understand a man who'd campaign for her, cheer her, that sort of thing? Really? Crist busted his butt for GW Bush as well. But there is no accounting for taste. Personally, I'm a Democrat, and Republican rejects do not get my Democratic vote. So I'll stand with Obama, Clinton and Gore for Meek, thank you, and feel free to stand with Palin, Wexler and Crist.
The company one keeps, in the end, is more telling than rafts of hyped out rhetoric. I stand with Obama. And the Democrats.

28. I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning!
In so many races people on this board are told to hold their nose and vote for the D, because it is better than the alternative. Not because the D in the race is necessarily worth voting for... but because you have to worry about the crazy on the other side.

Now, in many threads on this topic, I have seen some of the same people trying to preach party purity and that you MUST support the D and only the D... no matter what the result.

I am not advocating EITHER course of action... I just find the hypocrisy funny to read.

I'm sorry, but I don't want to see Rubio win. And if that means pulling the lever for Crist, then so be it. My co-worker and I were just discussing this the other day, how we would pull the lever for Crist, if Meeks doesn't shape up. I don't see how Meek can close the deal this late in the game. If Meek's polling numbers continue to sink, hopefully he will endorse Crist. Anyone but Rubio!!

mind now! I wasn't happy with Meek from the get go, and even though I don't know who Crist will caucus with, I feel I MUST vote for Crist.

There are other things about Crist that make me think he leans a bit toward the Dems. Many here in Florida know about the real Crist, and I have NO PROBLEM with it... just wish he would SAY IT!

In my more optimistic moments, which are RARE indeed, I sometimes wonder if Crist is having a subliminal message sent to him and he's not yet aware of it!

Anyone reading between the lines here??

He would vote for the most electable and most conservattve candidate in the race not the most conservative candidate. I apply that rule except I vote for the most electable and most liberal candidate.

Meek can not win in this political and economic environment. I'm bemused at Alaskans, New Yorkers. Oregonians, et cetera opining on this race with no understanding of Florida poltics.

Florida is a purple state that tilts red. The congressional delegation is majority Republican as well as the state House and Senate.

Florida is tough terrain for Democrats, not as tough as Alabama or Georgia but tough. That's why the U.S. House delegation is majority Republican and the state House and Senate is too.

A Democrat has to strike just the right note to win a statewide race.

I am afraid Rubio will win. If Crist wasn't in the race most of his support would go to Rubio and not Meek. If Meek wasn't in the race most, if not all, of his support would go to Crist.

57. This is where Democrats fuck themselves ............
We allow elected officials within our party to support someone with a conservative leaning ideology who is outside of our party.

I could handle breaking ranks with the party to support someone who is further left than the current DLC administration and the blue-dogs of the south-west. But when you break ranks to support someone on the other side of the spectrum, no matter what your rational, you continually sell another piece of the soul of the party.

Then we wonder why we can't get 60 votes in the Senate.

101. I am not disputing anyone's right to vote for whomever they choose .............
I am arguing that our elected party leaders are supporting those that aren't even part of the party and fall to the right of our ideology.

If voters make a choice, then that's the voters choice.

But, by allowing the party to support outside candidates it shows that we are willing to eat our and throw out our belief system just so we can keep out someone who is going to vote against us. And what do we get in return? Another candidate that officials of our party support that is going to vote against our legislation just slightly less than the other person we are selling our soles over to keep out?

Crist will vote against us 95% of the time, as opposed to the republican voting against us 99.5% of the time.

Like I said, I am all for voters making the choice they want - after-all, that's democracy. But, Democrats in FL chose Meeks to run as the party nominee, not Crist. I don't want to see a Democrat out their campaigning for Crist. If a party official feels that strongly about Crist vs Meeks, and chooses to supports Crist, then they should become an independent and support Crist and stop accepting party backing and funding.
