Summer Reading: Obama Buys Books
Obama Buys Books

President Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia went book shopping on Martha's Vineyard today. Their picks: John Steinbeck's The Red Pony, Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird for the girls and Jonathan Franzen's new novel, Freedom, for the president.

New York Times: "Call it a presidential perk, but the store let Mr. Obama buy an advance copy of Freedom even though it is not officially on sale until the end of the month."

3. ok, who would want to unrec a simple news story that has NOTHING to do with politics?!
:wtf: It's just a story about the president and his daughters buying books. A piece of interesting fun trivia about the first family. WHY would anyone unrec this??? (My rec returned it to zero.)

This is why i hate the unrec feature.

8. Perks of being the President - you get the book early
I'd sell it to him if I had the power. Hell I'd give him a copy if I were the author, and then I'd throw in an autograph and a few notes suggesting a few small things that might help the country.

9. And I'll bet he actually reads it, instead of hollowing out enough pages
to make room to hide a flask.

13. Side note - the soundtrack for the movie was written by
Aaron Copeland whom many consider America's greatest composer (Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring, etc.). I have an LP of the soundtrack, which was autographed by Copeland. One of my most prized possesions.

15. I bet if he wants to read a mystery to unwind
he has a staff member buy it so it looks like he reads all classics. Everything in the white house is so script written....I am watching The West Wing series and thats what it makes me think of, everything they do is purposeful of some type although we aren't sure who they are trying to reach but they are sure. They are conducting internal polls daily I bet.

19. The Red Pony is a great story
J.D., have you ever seen the movie version starring Robert Mitchum and Myrna Loy? The Obamas ought to get it from Netflix. A very touching, meaningful movie.

20. Hi Mimosa...
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 08:57 AM by jefferson_dem
I've never seen it but it looks like a classic. I'll have to pick it up. Thanks for the recommendation.

Interesting. I've been on a recent kick where only classic flicks are satisfying. It's all AMC, FMC, and ocassionaly IFC around here. Hate to say it but ... "they don't movies like those anymore." The other day, I was fixated on "Bad Company", an "acid Western" with a teenage Jeff Bridges.
