Meg Whitman outspends Jerry Brown 86-1
GOP candidate for governor Meg Whitman outspent Democratic opponent Jerry Brown by 86-1 in a five-week period ending June 30, according to financial reports filed Monday with the secretary of state.

In the reporting period, from May 23 to June 30, Brown spent $229,520 and Whitman $19.7 million, mostly on consultants and TV and radio ads. For the year, Brown has spent just $633,205 on his campaign.

If there's any silver lining for Brown, it's that as of June 30 he had more than $23.2 million cash on hand, more than twice what Whitman had left over. But that lead is expected to be short-lived, as most observers expect Whitman to write a check for millions more any day now.

Of the $26.3 million raised by the Whitman campaign during the filing period,$20 million came from Whitman herself. The eBay billionaire has now contributed $91 million out of her own pocket.

1. Oh how I hope she loses....
I don't like it when people act like they can buy an election.

2. Me neither. Linda McMahon is trying to do that here in CT.
I think it turns off voters.

3. Jerry should carry a big cut-out of Arnie everywhere he goes...
To remind the voters of the consequence of a bad vote

4. I think the state is in no mood for millionaire republicans right now
California is being devastated by unemployment and the draconian cuts to social services that Aaahnuld has implemented. He's talking about more furlough cuts again. I don't think Meg has a chance in hell. Neither does Fiorina against Barbara Boxer. Two rank amateurs against two of the most solid Democrats is obvious. They may have the money and the backing of their billionaire friends, but it's the regular citizens of vote.

5. The job doesn't pay but a fraction of what Meg is
dumping into her campaign.

It's her money, of course, but think how many charitable organizations could be lifted with some of her self-promotion budget.

That she's spending like a fool for the job should disqualify her in many voters' minds as being capable of holding it.

Go, Jerry.

16. Yep. An unsettling thought.
Unsettling and revolting.

But likely true. It just may have crossed her little mind...

8. Is Jerry Brown Really Qualified to be Governor of CA?
I checked IMDB, and he's never starred in an action film nor does he have any memorable catch phrases.

I still say Steven Segal in 2010!

:sarcasm:

10. A figure like that would be great in an ad saying she's buying an election
You can't get much worse then an 86 to 1 spending advantage, that kind of a figure would just scream 'buying the election' in a campaign ad.

14. Meg is spending like a....
18 year old mega pop star or hip hop artist! This should show she has no care whatsoever about the massive amounts of money that she's blowing that could have simply been turned over to the schools if she was going to be so loose with her billion!

15. Agree -- if the public interest held a high place on
Meg's list she would have donated the money where it was most needed, where the most people could be helped.

Of course that's way too altruistic for any Republican generally and Meg Whitman especially.

I'd have to admit that I hope she continues to dump millions of dollars into her self-promoting campaign only to lose big to Jerry Brown.

18. What's unique about JB is that every California voter already knows everything about him
He doesn't have to "sell" himself with big time ad buys.

The voters already know what they're getting.
