2. To support such a policy without taking steps to help workers over 50 find jobs is insane.

4. I will turn 70 next week, enjoy good health, and still have a bit of
energy. However, if I had to work a 40 hour week at the pace I was I'd never make it to Friday. This is insanity. Your energy and quickness of the brain start to devolve. That's the truth of it and I'll admit it. This guy needs to actually work instead of sitting in his ivory tower....

6. Get this out that the man who wants to be the next speaker of the house wants to hike the retirement
age. I'll tell you. I now have to work until I'm 67 to get full social security and I'm not thrilled about having to go another three years! people deserve a few years before they die to rest. Start taxing the hell out of the rich.

Face it, if the rich could dig us up from the grave and work people for 10 cents on the dollar, they'd do that too.

:eyes: These are exactly the morons who we DON'T need handling the government.

8. All things considered, I guess we can just look forward to more 3rd World jobs, like oldsters...
... pottering along sweeping trash or leaves from the sidewalks, because they had to be gotten out of the way of the younger workers, and after all, people do slow down as they age. There won't be enough Wal-Mart Greeter jobs for all of them (soon to be me and my hubby as well) -- besides which, not everyone is able to stand for an 8-hour shift -- but I'm sure we can make accommodations for all those white collar workers to transition to 3rd World type jobs more suitable to their declining abilities.

Who needs Social Security? It's not like anyone gets bad leg veins or heart trouble or osteoarthritis or shortness of breath by the age of 65, right? Hip replacements, new heart valves -- who needs 'em? All those things that would make retirement sound like a nice idea --pfft!

And please, let's not forget that (as I have read many times on DU itself) Older Workers Should Get Out of the Way and Let Younger People Have the Jobs. So they (we) will just have to adjust to the new reality.

More goddam Social Darwinism coming from the Repubs, and embraced by more than a few younger Dems.

Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 04:39 PM by KingFlorez
Not just because of energy, but because of how employers view age. Not many employers are going to keep someone on until they're 70 or hire someone of an advanced age.

12. If this ever happens there needs to be additional legistlation that addresses jobs for the elderly..
such as stronger regs for age descrimination and incentives for companies to hire and retain older workers.

think of the increased power of the greedheads to squeeze more and more out of workers!

Next, get rid of unemployment compensation and the minimum wage and watch Wall Street really take off!

22. Not sure why people don't get it
If you're not a member of the most wealthy minority in the United States you don't matter to the GoP. They will ignore your interests or actively work against them.

They spend and increase the deficit like anyone else when in the majority. With them you get the added perks of increased crony capitalism, tax breaks for the most wealthy and low to no regulation.

That said, regulation is meaningless if the regulators are corrupted puppets of those they are supposed to be regulating.
