Ron Paul-Endorsed Mike Lee wins Republican nomination for US senator from Utah
This guy is on the far-right big-time. Wants to pull out of the UN and abolish the IRS.

2. He might win a House seat, but not a Senate seat
Utah may be the most Conservative place in the US, but these anti-UN types are only pockets out in the sticks. Salt Lake is pretty Lib, as is Moab.

3. He'll win by 40 points
Keeping hope alive in places like Utah is pointless. The GOP could run Satan and he'd win.

4. Hell, McCain only took Utah by 27% Your 40% is unrealistic
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 06:06 PM by demwing
That would require a 70/30 split. Bennet never got that, and Hatch only once.

Without Bennet in the seat, the race can go anywhere, and though Republicans dominate Utah, Matheson proves that Dems CAN win at the federal level.

I lived in the state for 10 years. If Mike Lee proposes withdrawing from the UN and eliminating the IRS, he's probably too radical for Utah as a State.

6. McCain took it by 27% in a very Democratic year
It's laughable that you think Lee will lose Utah in a mostly Republican year. While he may not win by 40 points, I will eat dirt and pay your kids college tuition if he loses without a scandal. I guarantee he will win the election, and wanting to eliminate the IRS isn't radical at all these days, especially for Utah. The 5% of Utah residents who love the IRS weren't gonna vote for him anyway.

9. Unfortunately, the Dem challenger seems especially weak
So your predictions may hold.

But this guy is tied to Ron Paul, so all bets are off. Super big wrench in the works.

10. Well, he's only Ron Paul on certain things
Too bad he doesn't have Ron Paul's view of opposition to wars.

11. Well, if the Dem has any fight
he'll make the debate about Ron Paul. If Lee has to spend his time distancing himself from Paul, then the game is on.

BTW - 1st poll Ive seem (watch the video here): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/24/sam-granato-calls-utah-se_n_623957.html

BTW part 2 - The 2 most recent polls I've seen showing Obama's approval rating in Utah are from Dec '09 (37%) and Feb '10 (47%). He's up 10 points!

Also, Utah gives Obama the greatest "net" approval of any state (% Overall approval - % of Dems).

13. I don't think it will matter
Ron Paul himself could win in Utah. Idaho too. Really, what part of Ron Paul's views make him an outcast in Utah? As for a 47% approval rating by Obama, that is surprising. But even someone like Palin would beat Obama in 2012 by a pretty decent margin in Utah. Utah is extreme-right, I have no hope at all.

12. Holy Crap Lee STEPS in it on BP
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 05:17 PM by demwing
Q. "Does that leave taxpayers on the hook for part of the damages?"
A. "Well, yeah, it probably does!"

He later backpedals, saying that industry would probably step in on their own to help clean it up. Yeah, that happens all the time.

I'm telling you, this guy Mike Lee is our best chance at winning a Senate seat in Utah. If he keeps this shit up, it's going to be a train wreck.

8. Sure
Here's one of a video debate saying we should pull out of the UN:
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=750&sid=10957182

Couldn't find much on the IRS, but I did hear it. Here it say he want's to "Repeal the 17th amendment (never going to happen) abolish the dept. of education, EPA, FDA, IRS..."
