Clayton endorses Marshall

Former Congresswoman Eva Clayton of Warren County has endorsed Elaine Marshall in the Democratic Senate primary runoff.

Clayton is the first major supporter of Ken Lewis, the third place finisher in last week's Democratic primary, to express a preference in the June 22 runoff between Marshall, secretary of state, and Cal Cunningham, former state senator.

Clayton was the first woman and the only African-American elected to Congress from North Carolina.

"Elaine Marshall has built a career standing up for people," said Clayton. "Over and over, she's taken on powerful interests against long odds and won. That's the type of fighter North Carolina needs to represent us in Washington today."

1. I expect others will do the same

Although Cunningham has been making appropriately liberal noises in the primary, his reputation as a conservadem and the suspicion that he derives more of his support from the DSCC, rather than grassroots Democrats, may be the deciding factor.

Plus, he's a young, good-looking, articulate lawyer. He may be tainted by some guilt by similarity.
