Obama was top recipient of military-industrial complex money in 2008

The Campaign Cash Behind the Afghanistan Escalation

by Sue Sturgis

According to the Center for Responsive Politics' OpenSecrets.org database, the top recipient of defense industry money in the 2008 election cycle was Barack Obama, whose haul of $1,029,997 far surpassed Republican contender Sen. John McCain's $696,948.

During the 2008 cycle, the industry contributed a total of $23.7 million to federal candidates -- far more than the $17.4 million it invested during the 2006 cycle or the $18.1 million in the 2004 cycle.

The top five defense industry contributors during the 2008 elections were Lockheed Martin at $2.5 million, Boeing at $2.1 million, Northrop Grumman at $1.8 million, and Raytheon and General Dynamics at $1.7 million each.

And it appears their investment may be paying off: The Associated Press reports that analyst Howard A. Rubel of the global investment bank Jefferies & Co. sent out a client note today stating that the fiscal 2010 Defense Department Budget will likely boost demand for precision munitions, communications gear, helicopters, armor and surveillance systems.

Among the companies whose stock Rubel rated as "Buy"? General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman.

7. So what? They wanted to go w/a sure winner. During the primaries, Hillary was the top recipient.
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 07:16 PM by ClarkUSA
That didn't stop Pres. Obama from cutting lots of expensive pet military projects and eliminating wasteful no-bid practices
earlier this year.

Nah, Pres. Obama killed her Towering Outrage buzz when he announced an exit plan for 2 years from now. Now she's
desperately trying to create the next FauxRage of the evening, only it ain't going so well.

9. How much was PAC money versus individual contributions?
See, if an individual works for, say, Boeing as an aircraft mechanic, their personal contributions get flagged as "defense industry" contributions by people like CommonDreams, even if that person was donating money to Kucinich or the Committee for Fluffy Bunnies.

Check the sourced link. All you've got is your broken-record rhetoric. Must suck to have Pres. Obama announce an exit plan for
two year's from now, eh? That must kill your Outrage buzz. Now you're onto another FauxRage.

Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 10:02 PM by PHIMG
Just shows you how out of touch these DLC conservadems are ensconced in thier Washington D.C. bubbles.

Show me a politician who thinks 1M in campaign cash is peanuts. And lets not forget the earlier you get the money the more impaction it is.

Look at who funded Obama's early campaign if you want to know where his loyalities are. It wasn't internet $5 and $20 checks that hired his early campaign staff I'll tell you that much.

Those of who who supported him over Hillary had an idea that he'd turn out to be business as usual... but not this fast and not to this degree. Bring on a primary challenger.

OBAMA'S ESCALATION makes him LBJ.
