"Dem prospects getting better."
Dem prospects getting better
There haven't been a lot of good weeks on the Senate election front for Democrats so far in 2010, but they have received good news on their chances of picking up five different Republican held Senate seats this week:

-In Arizona there have been two polls now showing John McCain under 50% against Rodney Glassman. J.D. Hayworth continues to be competitive among Republican primary voters against McCain, and it appears a Hayworth-Glassman contest would be a total tossup.

-In Iowa Research 2000 showed Charles Grassley only up single digits against Roxanne Conlin, and although Rasmussen has Grassley up by 13 that's a far cry from January when they showed him leading her by 28 points.

-In Kentucky we found both Jack Conway and Dan Mongiardo within the margin of error against Rand Paul, who all independent public polling continues to show with a double digit lead.

-In North Carolina, Rasmussen showed Elaine Marshall improving her standing against Richard Burr by ten points in just two and a half weeks and Cal Cunningham with a nine point movement in his. If we find anywhere near that much momentum for Marshall and Cunningham on our North Carolina poll this weekend then we'll find each of them almost tied with Burr for the first time.

-In Ohio Quinnipiac and Rasmussen now both show Lee Fisher ahead of Rob Portman, and in the case of Rasmussen that's a six point improvement for Fisher over the last month. Even if his primary victory wasn't exactly overwhelming, his standing's improved.

One thing we really don't know for sure yet is whether 2010 will be solely an anti-Democratic year, or more broadly an anti-incumbent year where there are some surprising Republican losses in addition to the expected Democratic ones. Although the GOP still has to be seen as favored in all of these races, the movement in a Democratic direction in each of them is an encouraging sign for the party.

9. I think the key is simply getting rational people to vote.
I suspect we already know many irrational people vote Republican!

Independents tend to stay home in off-year elections unless they're mad. The more things improve, the better for Democrats, but the more things improve, the less motivated the general public will be to actually go out and vote. The situation plays into the hands of the Republicans, who thankfully are out of control or they'd clean up. People should be angry, too, STILL, at Republicans. We will see if it is enough, and we will see how the President attempts to get out the vote.

4. This is a good time for our prospects to improve
A little less that six months before the election gives us a chance to build more strength and enthusiasm that won't fizzle out before the vote.

6. That's true.
Republican enthusiasm is down a bit. Economy improving.

I still expect major losses but things are definitely better today than a month ago.

8. The Rethugs in Ohio also really messed up with that ad with Lee Fisher
where it looked like he was masturbating and was shirtless (taken from a documentary from an earlier Governor's race). Really, could the Rethugs be any more disgusting?

Suggestive GOP ad attacks Ohio Senate Dem hopeful

By JULIE CARR SMYTH (AP) – 9 hours ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A sexually suggestive political attack ad featuring a shirtless Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from Ohio in a provocative pose has drawn a barrage of decency and copyright complaints after being posted on a national Republican campaign committee's website.

The ad, created by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, features Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher bare-chested with one hand on his belly and the other one below the screen. The image oscillates as steamy saxophone music plays and a title reads: "He was more concerned about his job than yours."

Fisher won the Democratic nomination Tuesday primary in the campaign for the seat of retiring Republican U.S. Sen. George Voinovich.

Ohio newspapers dubbed the ad racy, tasteless and suggestive of masturbation.

YouTube pulled the spot from its website Thursday at the request of the Buckeye State Blog, an Ohio political blog that claimed rights to other pieces of video used in the ad. The ad drew 40,000 hits before it was pulled from the site, and Fisher campaign spokesman John Collins said the campaign saw an outpouring of online donations in an apparent backlash.

The shirtless image is taken from a few seconds from an on-camera conversation Fisher had with son, Jason, during the filming of a documentary on Ohio's 2006 gubernatorial campaign. Fisher already endured an earlier round of embarrassment over the scene when it was first posted online.

10. Yeah I Figured That the Next Set of Polls Was Going to Show Upticks for the Democrats
because there were several stories this week in our sycophantic news media proclaiming that the Republicans were going to win big in November. The "100 seats in the House" talking point from last summer has come back. Both AP and Politico got into the act on Thurs/Fri.

Keep repeating the same story and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy...
