Douglas Says He Will Not Veto Primary Change
MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont primary election is going to be held in August this year.

Gov. Jim Douglas said he will allow a bill to become law without his signature that would move the primary from mid-September to Aug. 24.

Douglas has opposed the change, but said there are more important things for the Legislature to do in the final weeks of this year's session.

The bill's backers say it will allow more time for general election ballots to be shipped to military personnel and other voters overseas.

Douglas is also asking the Legislature to make a technical fix to the law by changing the filing date for candidates in the general election.
