The Carnahan Coffin - NOT a threat against the Representative.
(I'm posting this because *I* posted the original thread about the coffin being "left" in Rep. Carnahan's lawn and feel a clarification is in oder. This article came to my attention via Dave Weigel who IS a progressive blogger. The article linked below has a lot of BS in it, but I think the overall storyline is probably the correct one. If we allow inaccurate rumors to spread about some things, then we cant accurately say that he LEGITIMATE acts of harassment are so.)

On Sunday night several members of the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition held a prayer vigil at Russ Carnahan’s office for the millions of babies that will be slaughtered under the democrat’s pro-abortion health care bill. We also prayed for the handicapped and the elderly who will be turned away as they face the death panels created by this bill. And, as we stood outside his office in the rain, we prayed for our country and for the democrats in Washington DC who were stealing away our freedom at that very moment.

We brought a coffin with us to represent the millions of Americans who will suffer from inadequate treatment and perish under Obamacare.

<snip>

After our prayer service we took our coffin and went and prayed on the sidewalk outside of Russ Carnahan’s home.

<snip>

The Carnahans told reporters that the coffin was left on their lawn. This is an absolute lie. We had a prayer service and then left. The state-run media didn’t bother to follow up on this outrageous lie before they published their hit piece… Oh, and the protest was on SUNDAY not Wednesday.

Again, I disagree with most of the characterizations that Rep Carnahan was lying, but I felt a clarification was in order.

The link will take you to photos of the protestors holding their "vigil" around the "coffin." I cant post them here because they're in .bmp form. As an aside, what idiot publishes a web page using .bmp images in 2010? What are they using? Windows 3.1?

1. good on you for posting this.
I was going to but figured that as it goes against the prevailing sentiment, it would be pointless to do so.

2. It's never pointless to speak the truth....
.... esp. when it goes against the popular tone.

Again, the wingnuts are already claiming that these threats are BS, if we dont concede the ones that are, we cant condemn the ones that AREN'T.

His office?

How the hell did the coffin get from his office to the lawn of his home?

Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) had a coffin placed “near his home,” a spokesman said Wednesday evening.

This is typical teabagger harrassment, and there is no excuse for it.

4. Sorry, I have a hard time believing they would tell the truth
I haven't seen one credible source that disputes Rep. Carnahan's claim, this is just some teabaggers claiming they didn't do anything wrong like they claimed they didn't yell slurs or spit on anyone.

5. The OTHER amusing aspect of this story....
... is that Politico is the one who pushed the story.

The same Politico we like to bash as a right-wing rag. :)

6. Thanks Clio -- BUT.. I have to say this.
Our representatives -- ALL of them --- should never EVER have people showing up at there homes.

NEVER.
The exception would be the White house. Which has proper security. Most senators and Representatives do not have that luxury for the places they call home.
They have offices in there districts and states and they are in DC. Their homes should be a respite. THIS is the problem I have with this.

They are justifying what they did, when what they did was invade a person's private place. What I find interesting, is where these protesters are getting this information. Private addresses are not aften posted online --

It seems to be there is a word of mouth campaign going on from people within those neighborhoods,

7. I totally agree. To bring a coffin to the sidewalk outside of his home is creepy and way too close.
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 10:01 AM by Jennicut
What about his kids?
I would say this if Dem protestors did this to Repubs. Way, way too close. This goes along with Grayson's 5 year old picking up the phone at his house and hearing death threats of his or her father. Just a line people shouldn't cross but I doubt the teabaggers care about that. I don't care what the coffin was for, stay away from these reps families. The WH has the secret service, these reps have no security.

9. Oh definitely ... these people are still fruit cakes....
.... and what they did was tacky, rude and bordering harassment.

But the intent of the coffin was not done in the way it was being reported.

I HATE the way conservatives "romance" the unborn. By that I mean they wave the image of unborn babies around like a battle flag. They dont do it because they really truly care, they do it to puff up their own pride.

If they REALLY cared, they'd be that passionate about the children AFTER they were born.

We had a fruit cake preacher hold a gospel meeting at our church when I was in high school. One night, he brought "Adam" the "unborn baby" he had kept in formaldehyde. Reminded me of the fetal pig I had dissected in biology class. When you got up close to it, you could see that "Adam" had seams ... because "Adam" was made out of plastic. It wasn't real.

Needless to say, this fruit cake preacher was informed he would not be finishing the rest of the week's services.

Disgusting.

8. Sorry, Russ wouldn't lie about this...the tea baggers are trying to twist it and smear him
I am from MO, and the Carnahan family is well respected.

Here is some more info, from local news:

Coffin placed outside Congressman Russ Carnahan's residence

KSDK -- A spokesperson for Congressman Russ Carnahan said a coffin featured in a weekend health care reform protest was placed on the Democratic lawmaker's front lawn Sunday night.

Communications Director Sara Howard said about a dozen people brought the coffin to Carnahan's private St. Louis residence. After holding a vigil they took the coffin away.

The coffin is one of a list of incidents and threats made toward Democratic lawmakers in the days since the health care bill was approved.

Howard said she feels there can be disagreement on the health care reform without resorting to threats and intimidation.

11. I'm sorry, I don't buy it. They could've set up that vigil anywhere - at the state gov't
but NO. They chose to do it at Carnahan's home. Can you imagine how his family must've felt everytime they wanted to leave the house?
They're backtracking now because of the negative attention they are getting from the MSM...just like that guy who thru money at the man with Parkinson's. NOW that he was all over the news, he's sorry.

He is not the sharpest tool in the shed. It should comes as no surprise to anyone that he could flub something like this.

13. only te bagger morons would not understand how in light
Of all these death threats to Congressman that using a coffin could be interpreted as a threat to put Carnahan in the coffin.

Even if they didn't intend is as a threat bringing a coffin to his house was an act of intimidation.

16. Sounds like two separate incidents to me -
- one says they were there on a Wednesday and took the coffin with them and it's in a garage. The other says a coffin was left on Carnahan's office on a Sunday.

Why can't both be true?
