I have been working on Sen. Kerry since last spring . . . he wrote back form letters about the s-CHIPs program and something about using more women in research on diseases. It's like he didn't even read my letter or listen to my phone call. Each new call or letter got the same response. Joining the group of Senators who support the public option, after a huge barrage of messages on his Facebook page, is about the furtherest towards Medicare for All Sen. Kerry has committed to. . . despite the fact that it was the dream of Sen. Kennedy, our former senior senator.

Took a lot longer for me to get through to Wyden's office than Merkley's! I wonder why!!! Merkley's office laughed at my conjectures here too.

Even if you've got senator(s) that are already signed on to the letter to pass HCR with public option through budget reconciliation, remind them to:

a) Make sure that the president understands that polling shows that this isn't a minority position by the American people but a substantive majority of people that want this, and it will be perceived that the Democrats are working against the will of the American people with a "perceived" solid 50 seat majority supporting this. If less than 50 senators support this, we have a "corruption" problem where many senators are working against the will of their constituents, even though the party champions itself as a voice for the average American.

b) That if the barriers get big about "not having enough votes", that this should be a call to arms for the next step of reminding the American public why public campaign financing is needed precisely for these sorts of critical situations and that that bill should be put on the table NEXT if this bill can't be resolved as the ONLY way possible to move forward with important legislation where corporate interests stand in the way. In other words ante up the pressure if they persist in the war against the American people! Perhaps a similar second letter campaign for public campaign financing should and would be followed next to elevate the message to the American people of what needs to be done to get the people's work done for them.

c) if neither substantive HCR legislation is passed, nor is public campaign financing even attempted, the American voters will make the Democrats pay BIG TIME in the coming elections as not only a party that works against them, but a party of manipulative liars. Ask them if they want that to happen! Those that do work for us need to find a way to commnicate to us that they really substantively want to work for us, not just talk about it.

If you have a Democratic Senator you want their support. Ask them to support a Public Option and if they do then ask them to sign the letter to Reid calling for a Public Option to be included in a Reconciliation Bill. It can't hurt to ask for the support of Republicans but aside from perhaps a few very very long shots there is no chance of moving any of them.

I am in NY and both my Senators already signed the letter to Reid. I thanked them and them asked their staff to ask the Senators to convey my message to other members of the Democratic Caucus. My message boiled down to the following:

I have worked hard over the last 6 years to help Democrats win the White House and win and build majorities in Congress. During that time I have given support to Democrats who I do not always see eye to eye with because I thought we still shared enough core Democratic values and I felt I could count on the Democratic Party coming through for us on the matters that mean the most. The fate of the Public Option is now the acid test for me. If Democrats can't deliver on even that modest a reform, a reform that is much more popular with the general public then the overall HCR plan they are pushing, I no longer feel any motivation to help the Democratic Party win contested seats unless I feel a personal alliegene to them and their politics. Bottom line, don't count on me to keep doing what I have been doing for the last 6 years if Democrats cave on this one.

I think it is a factor of how the tallying software works and the feed connects. I've seen other people report changes, also in the 50,000 to 60,000 range based on when they log on or refresh. But the numbers seem to be rising at the same rate from any starting point.

I called Senator Kohl and said "PLEASE real reform now. If we can't get single payer, and public option is our next best choice then GET IT DONE in reconciliation. NOW! Folks can't wait, they are dying and going bankrupt at a fast clip without health insurance."

Called Senator Feingold's office, immediately sent to a voice mail box. It was full. I am hoping a lot of calls for this issue are flooding in.

I have written Kohl and Feingold repeatedly on this issue. I asked them to make sure they are a part of the Senators standing for a Public Option.

I did allow MoveOn to fax on my behalf also.

That 202 line is nearly always voicemail. Just so you know for later. I call them once a week about this issue without fail. They completely know who I am at this point I suppose. But whatever. I was told by both Senators staffers that they just aren't sure "reconciliation is the way to go". What else is there???? I said the bill they have put forth will hurt us immensely and they can do better. We need real reform, not mandates to buy a faulty product.
