Cenk Uygar: "It looks Rahm Emanuel is done"
Rahm's Parting Shot at Obama Insiders
Cenk Uygar

It looks Rahm Emanuel is done. Dana Milbank transcribed an article written by Rahm Emanuel today in The Washington Post. Never has an article been more clearly written to support a political benefactor.

As I was reading the article lavishing praise on Rahm Emanuel and throwing dirt on everyone else inside the White House, I kept thinking two things. First, how many leaks has Rahm given Milbank over the years? How much do they love each other? Milbank gets a cherished inside source so he can seem like he's got the scoop on what's happening in DC and Rahm gets a hatchet man that'll write whatever he tells him to, I mean whatever he leaks to him as "important inside information."

My second thought was, "Wow, what a hatchet job on Jarrett, Gibbs and Axelrod!" Since Rahm is obviously feeding this to Milbank, that is very revealing. You don't throw these kinds of bombs unless you've already lost. This is an act of desperation. It's bound to make mortal enemies of these people inside Obama's inner circle. You can't really work with these people anymore. That means you're already finished there.

This is basically Rahm saying on his way out, I was right all along and these guys were wrong. Maybe it's a last minute attempt at a Hail Mary to swing the decision in his favor if he can start a conversation in DC about how he had offered better advice than the other three to Obama (by the way, everything he claims to have been right about inside the article was disastrous advice that led Obama further and further away from his voters). But either way, that means he thinks he is very close to being on his way out the door.

They clearly have no problem espousing the ideology of whoever signs their paychecks, and they do have a proven track record of extreme productivity.

If we don't, most of them will likely end up typing posts for GOPAC.

232. My Post Earlier At GD... Too Many Of Us Are Feeling "Hinky" About RAH-UUUMMM!
Since MOST issues have gone awry... let the cynic in me once again rise to the surface!

I'm truly sorry for having so little "faith" in the OVERWHELMING chaos I'm seeing in D.C.! Not to mention the basic capitulation of so MANY Congress Critters willing to REALLY put the agenda of "we the people" first! From the TOP down, D.C. can't seem to get "mobilized" together IN ANY WAY to do the people's work!

While listening to the conversation on C-span this AM about Bi-Partisanship working, MOST callers, Left, Right, Moderate, Independent and any other group in between, simply echo the sentiment that people who tune into what is going on, are very exasperated!

RAH-UUUMMM does Need to go, and perhaps a round up of several more "key" players who are gumming up the gears of what Obama ACTUALLY campaigned on. From the get-go, I groaned when I heard what role RAH-UUUMMM was going to be given! Then there's the issue of his TWO brothers Ari & Zeke whom I've found that many people weren't even aware of.

I'm going to go out on a limb a bit too, which perhaps is something just completely off base, but it HAS made me wonder about from time to time. It's the issue of JOE LIE-BERMAN and HOW & WHY he's been able to continue to "get his way" without any repercussion or dressing down from the WH! I've scratched my head many times and felt my anger rising more times than not when I've seen the "twit" in action. I'm NOT Anti-Semitic in any way, even though I've wondered about some of the actions taken by Israel. I live in a community with a LARGE Jewish population and know some VERY fine people who agree with me about what is going on in Israel.

Kind of rambled my way off the main topic, still I have been one who felt RAH-UUUMMM was a very poor choice, and now a year has passed and it's STILL GRID-LOCK!! And "we the people" are LOSING the game, BIG TIME!

DLC policies have been DEVASTATING to this country, yet you and other DLC apologists such as rahm are still pushing their FAILED policies. Pathetic! Got rid of bayh, let's hope rahm is next!

-Free trade that benefits the few while sending middle class jobs overseas,

-repeal of Glass-Steagall (banking de-regulation) which helped cause the current economic disaster

-media consolidation

-MFN status of China, which allowed them to empower their economy while devastating ours,

-strengthening the corporate stranglehold on this county

159. The DLC policies haven't failed.
They have worked perfectly as designed....
they have successfully enriched the top 1% at the expense of the Working CLass and The Poor.
DLC Mission Accomplished!!!

Lets do a quick review of the first year of the Obama Administration:

*WARS fully funded and EXPANDING. Bill sent to our children...Mission Accomplished !

*Trillion Dollars given to friends and campaign contributors on Wall Street. No Strings Attached...Mission Accomplished!

*Military Spending INCREASED....Mission Accomplished!

*Trillion+ Dollars given to the Health Insurance Industry. Easily Avoidable, symbolic only strings attached....Mission almost Accomplished!

*Force all Americans to buy invisible products from For Profit Corporations who manufacture nothing and create no (Value Added) wealth..."A Uniquely American Solution"..indeed. .....Mission almost Accomplished!

*Kill the possibility for a REAL "Public Option" or REAL Universal Health Care for at least another generation, and begin the Entitlement Reform defunding of Medicare (-$500 Billion)....Mission almost Accomplished!

*Block ANY REAL re-regulation of BIG BANKS and Credit Cards....Mission Accomplished!

*Protect the Bush War Criminals and Torturers from JUSTICE....Mission Accomplished.

*Throw the GBLTs under the bus and expand "faith based" initiatives....Mission Accomplished!

*Reinforce the worst Police State provisions of the Patriot Act and strengthen the Unitary Executive....Mission Accomplished!

*Protect the very richest. Tell the Working Class that they CAN WILL compete with 3rd World Slave Labor for their jobs.....Mission Accomplished!

*EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act) killed in the crib....Mission Accomplished!

*More Anti-LABOR "Free Trade"....Mission almost Accomplished!

*Jobless Recovery....Mission Accomplished

*The Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party SHUT OUT of the Obama Administration...Mission Accomplished!

*Accelerate the destruction of Public Education...Mission Accomplished!

*Bury next generation under such a debt burden that they will never be able to afford any social or economic programs that will benefit their Working Class....Mission Accomplished.

And ALL this in less than a year!!!
You can't argue with THAT kind of success!
It only sucks if you have to Work for a Living!

He and Rahm should make a lovely pair sitting on the outside looking in if this in fact happens. I couldn't be happier. Obama needs to get some progressive advisors in the White House to have some real debate on issues and policies.

22. That's what right wingers said about Bush, remember?
Whenever there were objective, good reasons to harshly criticize the Bush Administration the right dismissed it as "hatred" for Bush. Let's not make the same mistake on the left.

-Are some people overall haters or irrational on some issues? Yes.

-Are some people blindly supporting the administration/president, just like R's did when Bush was in power? Yes.

-Are some people presenting strong, valid criticisms of the administration? Yes.

24. I'm just talking about the fixation on Rahm......
and I'm saying that it's stupid and not really well justified,
beyond the fact that he used the word retard and alledgely did "something"
or other to Dean that some people didn't like.

I'm just saying that those who are shitting on Rham,
might as well just admit that they simply don't care for
this President (which is where the buck stops),
and should refrain from the childish behavior of hating just cause they can.

Rahm is not the problem in the White House, and those who believe this,
aren't really sure why they bought this line that would allow them
to demonize Rham without justification.

I don't dislike Rham, because I haven't been given a logical reason why I should.

I don't dislike this President, because I know what he's done and acknowledge it,
know what I'd like him to do that he didn't (but my support wasn't predicated on
him doing what all that I wanted, nor all that I wanted in 13 months' time....
and I believe he has more than plenty more time to do what I am hoping he will.

Again, the intense obsession over Rham is just an excuse, because whatever folks
don't like about what he's done, if the President acted on it, then the President
is the culprit.

27. Yes and mostly no.
Yes, we can criticize the president for making poor choices in his cabinet. But in order to make that argument we also need to explain why the members themselves (see Wall Street shills/dupes like Geithner/Summers for great examples) are doing a terrible job.

I don't want to waste any time rehashing the valid, "logical reasons" why Emanuel is terrible because I know you've already seen them all and apparently we have different definitions of the phrase "logical reasons".

TYT is a 3 hour M-F show. Just about everything you linked to are things we have discussed or will discuss (again). This blog about Rahm is one teeny, tiny piece of the puzzle, not even close to a main focus for the show.

Finally, here's a quick sports analogy: If Obama is the team owner or manager, yes, he's ultimately responsible. But some responsibility also and obviously falls on the players he selects. And yes, if he fails to replace a poorly performing player after a certain amount of time, it goes back to Obama (even though it's still fair to criticize the player).

The fact that some would encourage in-fighting is stupid,

My only issue is that in addition to them, we shouldn't ignore links that are critical of the administration and Dems if they're supported by facts. I have no interest in being one sided for or against any administration. I'm interested in progress.

We can disagree on how to get there, but I'm not going to pretend that it's productive to ONLY criticize Republicans and for the Democrats to ONLY hear criticism and receive pressure from the right.

i say I want him to succeed desperately. I will help him any way I can. But I will not back him when he betrays progressive values. I have seen a list of his accomplishments and feel grateful for them. But that isnt enough. I could give you a list of failures but you know them well, I trust. So I will only give one example because I think it is important. Not that the issue is more important than others but important from the fact that I do not see any reason for his reluctance to act. DADT. That is an easy issue for him as I see it. He should have suspended prosecution immediately upon becoming president. Doesnt cost a cent. But now he says it needs a year study. Please understand how this insults me. A year study? If so, why didnt the year start a year ago? If you disagree, i will listen. But to me it doesnt need a year study.

The person with deep seated hate is Rahm..

hate of those who paid out their hard earned money to ever elect him

And hate for those who gave their hard earned money to get his new boss elected to office..and then had
the audacity to say this to them.......

Rahm Emanuel Tells Liberals To Kiss His Arse

See the "haters" are those who despise the very people who "'brung them to the dance!" with their hard work and hard earned money..and they hate that anyone is holding them accountable, in any way!

I would never sit still with Kissinger by my side as a democrat and have him represent me as Obama has with Kissinger..

I would never have sold out the American people's tax money to the whores who destroyed the American and world economy , as Obama and Rahm have.\

I would never have accelerated a war of lies.

I would never have fought to protect those who illegally spied on Americans..as Obama with Rahm at his side have. I would have made sure they were prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law..

I would have restored the Rule of law and the Constitution ..unlike what Obama and Rahm have done.

I would never have reauthorized the Patriot Act or made it even worse as Obama and Rahm have.

And i would have authorized the Dept of Justice to look into all laws broken by the previous administration and hold any and all who broke the laws of this nation and international law and our constitution accountable to the fullest extent of the law!

No siree..I have real DEMOCRATIC Principles and Values..they do not look like or reflect what has been done in 1 year by Obama and Rahm!

And my democratic Principles and Values are not for sale to the higest bidder like Obama's and Rahm's are or like many of the propagandists here are.

I find it offensive beyond words that anyone who calls themselves a Democrat would accept it either!

Without his dire influence, Obama may or may not hear and act on more progressive advice. If he did, our hopes for him would be vindicated. If not, it does clear the air and set the stage for a progressive challenger in '12.

Granted, a person is known by the company he keeps; that being the case, if Obama changes the company he is keeping wouldn't that modify your opinion of him, let you again give him the benefit of the doubt?

26. As Ezra Klein said, the Rahm bashing is weird. And Cenk (former R) makes it weirder
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 02:44 PM by demhistorian
Did Cenk choose to pile on Ezra Klein when he wrote, "It's a bit weird to see so much blame accruing to Rahm Emanuel for the administration's woes?" No, because a neutral-pro piece on Emanuel from someone like Ezra Klein that essentially said the same thing as Millbank's wouldn't create the rabid response from progressives that one from Milbank would. Millbank has more red meat potential for the left.

Did Cenk write a pouty conspiracy-filled piece in response to Ed Luce's article that not only blamed Emanuel for the administration's woes but also David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, Robert Gibbs? No, because to have done so, he would have had to defend Enanuel to a degree. And we can't have that.

So Cenk (former-R) waits until a target of the left, Dana Milbank, writes a pro-piece on Emanuel to pull out crackpot theories and push them as fact. And make no mistake, the technique is a hallmark of the fringe - make a popular proposition to your audience (Emanuel on the way out) and then invent little pieces of supporting evidence (Emanuel wrote the piece, not Millbank) to make the proposition more believable.

And to think all this weird obsessiveness springs from an undying love of Howard Dean.

31. I'm intrigued by this post.
First, how you attempt to discredit Cenk by going out of your way to write (former R) as if that's relevant in some substantive way (not to mention the amusing insulting adjectives, i.e. "pouty"). Then the implied bashing of "the left" (this is Democratic Underground after all). I mean, if you mean "far left", say it. Granted, O'Reilly, Beck and Co say "far left" to describe anyone not right of center, but still, it's something.

And then an implied jab at those who respect Howard Dean?

46. "intrique" seems to be the modus operandi for Cenk and his employees
I mean, he states Rahm in on his way out (which there is no evidence of), and claims Rahm wrote the Millbank piece (again, no evidence of that). Lots on intriguing pieces of fiction there.

** you attempt to discredit Cenk by going out of your way to write (former R) as if that's relevant in some substantive way ***

I didn't go out of my way to write it. It was pretty damn easy. And I think it is pretty relevant when that same person proposes a progressive-tea party alliance and writes for an internet rag founded by another former Republican who once worked with Gingrich to bring down Bill Clinton and endorse John McCain in 2000.

** not to mention the amusing insulting adjectives, i.e. "pouty" **

Would you have preferred "wacky?"

** Then the implied bashing of "the left" (this is Democratic Underground after all). I mean, if you mean "far left", say it. **

From DU's original charter: "Democratic Underground welcomes Democrats of all stripes, from centrist to liberal. We are all part of the same coalition..." This correctly confirms that using a term to distinguish one stripe from the next is entirely appropriate on DU.

** And then an implied jab at those who respect Howard Dean? **

No, an outward and straightforward slam on those who's disdain for Rahm stems from their love of Howard Dean.

Yes, it was an opinion piece, which you can agree or disagree with. If you think the Milbank piece is not nearly enough evidence to come to Cenk's conclusion, that's a perfectly reasonable opinion.

And yes, you DID go out of your way to throw in the "former Republican" because your aim is to discredit the source. And your definition of "the left" is again, quite telling. But it's good to know where you're coming from with the Dean disdain, etc.

Finally, here are three recent videos that easily dismiss the amusing "Republican" smear attempt:

-Fox News Making Up BS On Captured Terrorists

-Right Wing Nuts Rewriting Textbooks For Schools!

-Leaked: Republicans Meet w/ Wall Street For Orders

PS---I'm open about who I work for. When I ask others who constantly defend the admin and smear critics (no matter the facts), the thread gets deleted. So enjoy your "employees" jabs, but also take note of the deleted sub-threads. I'm not saying anything, I'm just sayin'.

Yes, it was an opinion piece

It was presented as fact. This line alone is slanderous: "Dana Milbank transcribed an article written by Rahm Emanuel today in The Washington Post."

No, I didn't go out of my way to point out Cenk is former Republican. The implies it took a measurable amount of effort or inconvenience. It didn't.

Have I given a definition of "the left?" I scanned my posts again and saw no such definition.

It's pretty obvious the roots of Rahm-o-phobia stems from Dean's loyal followers.

<[[I'm open about who I work for. When I ask others who constantly defend the admin and smear critics (no matter the facts), the thread gets deleted. So enjoy your "employees" jabs, but also take note of the deleted sub-threads. I'm not saying anything, I'm just sayin'.>]]

That's because DU admins consider that line of reasoning an accusation of paid shilling, as if defenders of a Democratic administration on a Democratic message board have to be paid to defend their leaders. :eyes:

65. We are using different dictionaries apparently
Slanderous? Hyperbole (by both Cenk and yourself funny enough) yes, slander, no. As for the Republican thing, I realize the act of typing requires minimal effort, but the motive (attempting to discredit) was obvious and easily refuted by my three links, and I have plenty more where that came from.

And it's not some irrational hatred of Rahm. People are praised and criticized based on their actions. Plenty has been written about Rahm prior to this opinion blog full of reasons for progressives (I get it, you do not claim to be a progressive) to dislike him politically. It's not personal. It's not like Rahm punched Cenk or anyone else in the stomach and insulted their mothers. It's about looking at his influence and the direction he moves certain things, in addition to results, or lack thereof. We can agree or disagree on those moves and actions, but attempting to dismiss real concerns and criticism as "Rham-o-phobia from Dean's loyal followers" is not only non-substantive, it's inflammatory and unproductive.

Finally, I never accused anyone of "paid shilling". People have friends, family and coworkers who would defend them to the death (sometimes rationally, sometimes irrationally). Transparency is a non-partisan issue, and quite a relevant one to most people because it provides a context.

I was never a particular follower of Dean's. I have found myself agreeing with him a lot during the HCR debate. My disdain for Rahm Emanuel is born of his beating on the progressives and supporting the RW Blue Dogs in the House and the Senate. I don't think he has a liberal bone in his body or a liberal thought in his head.

Republican roots. Any criticism of the President's policies or those of his CofS are met with accusations of being Republicans.

The whole "Rahm is Rove" obsession meme is loony and pretty damn creepy. One might as well say "I live outside the reality-based political universe."

Regardless of what one thinks of Rahm, Cenk is a fool.

"First, how many leaks has Rahm given Milbank over the years? How much do they love each other?..."

Nothing that follows deserves serious consideration, from my perspective.

In part, you're right. But Obama is making decisions based on the opinions he hears from his closest advisors. The fact that there are no progressive voices in his inner circle is a real problem, and I think Rahm is likely a gatekeeper against those voices.

60. The more time we as Democrats spend our energy, time and emotions
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 03:33 PM by FrenchieCat
on this in-fighting bullshit,

the more we are undermining what we should be doing; fighting the Right,
and supporting the Left, the worse shape we will be in!

If we continue to ignore good things coming out of this administration,
while we fight over nothing, the worse our chances will be!

If we ignore this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

and we fixate on Rahm Emmanuel...that says more about us than about Rahm or
anything else for that matter!

Use the time you have to write to the White House and support this!

Obama would consider increasing income cap for Social Security payroll tax.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/remarks-pres...

Time to write and call and fax your Senators to support the Bennett Letter!

Use the time you have and expose this!

Again, wasting time indicting Rahm is like being fixated on Tiger Woods; it's serves no real purpose.....and only helps us waste time, when we really don't have that kind of time.....
not if we want to win in November. Period.

Those who participate in the bullshit will be as much to blame as Rahm or whomever for our loses.
We are supposed to be smarter than this, and so I thought was Cenk! He is turning out to be far more of a disappointment to me than Rahm ever could be.

61. Pressure from the left HELPS.
If the admin only hears pressure from the right (and we all know they do), that's what they'll respond to. Plus pressure from the left makes the admin appear more moderate, which is supposed to be a political positive.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Support AND pressure as needed.

64. We ain't fucking chewing gum and walking to shit!
we are standing on a chair with a belt slung up above.

We are wasting our energy, our focus, our emotions, and our time listening to
Cenk rail against Rahm just cause he ain't obviously got shit to do.....

I know this because what we are NOT talking about are the health Care marches,
that are taking place all over the country
supporting health Care....and we know the media really won't talk about it,
if we don't even bother.

So instead, we are kept busy talking about one another.

It is a strategy that will not work, and has never worked.

Tell Cenk I suggest that he starts spending his every waking moments
attacking the Right! If he can go after individuals on the Right
that are running for Congress, than more power to him...since he seems
to be able to concentrate on individuals in the White House.

I used to really like Cenk a lot, and he's got losta truth in him,
but he's become arrogant, and is making this Rham thing a personal issue
....and dragging a lot of us into it, when it ain't gonna solve shit.

He's leading us where we don't need to go,
and he needs to revisit his priorities,
and what the ending purpose is to what he does each and every day.
That's what I'm saying.

but FrenchieCat will be damned before she aims her ire on what ain't gonna do us a jackshit
worth of good beyond assisting in keeping Dems fighting one another.

76. Here's a little parable I learned from my parrots
When parrots see a hawk overhead, you know the first thing they often do? They bite the parrot sitting next to them. This can be troubling to their human companions who often suffer bites when a bird on their shoulder gets frightened.

What's the point of the biting? To get the flock moving against an attacker. Sure, the hawk is the ultimate danger, but if half the flock sits on their asses while they're under attack, it's a safe bet that someone is gonna end up as that hawk's lunch.

That's all this is: biting some Democrats in the ass to say, "You're under attack! Start doing something productive!!" Cenk's doing our "flock" a favor.

that the President is listening to someone other than Rahm: for all the stuff about him being tough, Rahm hasn't been tough when it has come to getting the more progressive bits of this administration's agenda through Congress. Now, with reconciliation likely, it seems that Rahm is on the outs, and may be on his way out.

he just has to go. He was hired to help get legislation through congress. He has failed on many levels.

Whether it was his or Obama's fault for not getting stuff done in congress, getting rid of the ineffectual Rahm can give Obama a chance to start over, to put out a new message. Hell to put out a coherent message. The fact that the administration's message has been nebulous and dodgy may not be Rahm's fault, but we need a do over on the "message to the people" front. Rahm taking a fall will let them try again.

1)-It was an interpretation based on Milbank's piece, not a major announcement of breaking news. The prediction may well be incorrect, like any prediction (and no one is claiming otherwise).

2)-Cenk didn't say Rahm was going to quit/be booted in the next 10 seconds. Assuming it does happen, you'd think it would be done quietly on a Friday (if it happens at all).

Of course he's speculating. He's a commentator, and he doesn't pretend otherwise on the show or anywhere else. The fact that some compare his opinion piece to an AP story is their problem, not his.

So no need for the crossing out of speculating, it's an accurate description. You disagree with his speculation, which is fine.

214. Cenk is making some slightly unsubstantiated conclusions
But reading the article in question, they are not that crazy.

Milbank would not have come up with something like this on a whim. The idea that must have sparked it and the opinions stated seems decidedly like they are built on information from an inside player. It reeks of insider talk.

And I can't see many sources apart from the one Cenk points to. And from there, the leap to Cenks conclusion is quite valid.

Whether you like Rahm or not. To me he comes across as not having a stake in the policies. Whenever it has come close to really being about the much fabled "change" - he seem to fight it. Based on my limited insights.

unfortunately I agree that dear old Rahm was a shill. Otherwise I would say it, as I don't personally give a crap about what anyone on DU thinks about use of the expression "retarded".

There are much much worthier causes than linguistic conformity.
