Disturbing offensive sign I saw near my home
Fire this half breed communist and hire Ron Paul.

In a suburb of NYC

I want to remove it, but it is a very busy street .

2. I'd like to see Ron Paul forced to denouce his racist contingent.
That would do a lot to help keep him out of power, assuming he was willing to do it.

3. Thanks for providing evidence
that racism is far from defeated in this country, for demonstrating that racism is not confined to the states that comprise the old confederacy (as some chauvinistic individuals would attempt to make us believe), and that we have lots of work to do where racism is concerned.

I confess ignorance of the law regarding the posting of signs with inflammatory language, but if anything can be done, it should be done. This will only get worse if it goes unanswered.

12. I'll forgive the heart thingie
if you promise to call out regional chauvinism whenever you encounter it. I'll do the same, so maybe a message will get delivered that it's a form of bigotry that alienates & offends a good number of DUers who are doing the best they can under the circumstances of their surroundings.

Edited on Mon Feb-15-10 01:35 PM by Fire1
If that's what you're referring to, I have backed off from doing that myself. In my last post about Ky. and McConnell, I did include, "in their defense, they are living in a VERY red state." I understand that in such cases, Dems are fighting an uphill battle that's easier said than done. You have my support!:pals:

21. Glad to hear it
Imagine how progressives (and Democrats of all stripes) who live in southern states must feel, coming to a board titled DEMOCRATIC Underground, and seeing their entire state - or the entire region - written off as a lost cause. Some of those people may become discouraged, wondering whether it's even worthwhile to try any longer, seeing that many of their fellow Democrats living in other areas have given up on their cause as well.

I'm encouraged to see signs that this regional chauvinism won't be tolerated on DU. I just hope the rules continue to get enforced, as I consider blanket insults against residents of a state or region of the country to be one of the most divisive, disruptive stances that a person can take. If one is unwilling to promote Democratic ideals whenever possible - even where the odds are stacked against them taking hold - then I question that person's commitment and character. If they're so willing to show their asses where regionality is concerned, what other prejudices may be lurking just below the surface?

41. I dunno
I come to DU and see vicious attacks on our Democratic president, so I'm not surprised about anything.

I can and do admit that racism exists everywhere, but you have to admit the south's special history with racism and it that might be the source of the south's special reputation for racism.

We aren't to ignore the significance of a cluster of cancer incidences in one particular town, just because cancer occurs in every town.

Then you have Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn, and Bronx--all with 'burbs. And anyway NY is littred with Repubs.

27. NYC is made up of 5 boroughs. Long Island is not a borough (but they sure as hell wish they were).
:P Unless of course you speak about, Long Island City but that's in Queens. And Long Island has always had a good number of racists. I went to school at Our Lady of Loretto in Hempstead for a bit. However, that was more ethnically diverse. Okay, it had more minorities when I lived there.

36. Unfortunately
Ron Paul and the Tea Party draw racists. The Tea Party actually seems to encourage it at times.

The Tea Party has Tom Tancredo open a convention for them. They cheer wildly when he mentions "literacy tests" in order to vote yet they are mystified why many call them racists.

Their message is, "Let's take back the country from the fellow who isn't one of 'us' who is destroying it".
