Pro-Zelaya radio journalist waylaid by attackers and shot to death in Honduras
By Associated Press, Published: July 14

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Gunmen in Honduras have killed a rural radio station’s director who was a supporter of ousted President Manuel Zelaya.

Police say 26-year-old Nery Jeremias Orellana was riding on a motorcycle when he was stopped and shot in the head by unidentified assailants. He died later in a hospital.

Orellana headed Radio Joconguera de Candelaria in the province of Lempira near Honduras’ border with El Salvador. He was a member of the National Popular Resistance Front. The group formed after the coup that removed Zelaya from office two years ago.

Human rights advocates say at least 22 journalists have been killed in Honduras since 2007.

1. Isn't it about a dozen since Lobo took over?

And not a single case has been solved.

4. I haven't found the answer to that, yet. It seems so many.
Same pattern everywhere where the military/police kill dissidents, isn't it?

Another report, from RSF:

Young radio station manager gunned down on eve of community radio station meeting
Published on Friday 15 July 2011.

Nery Jeremías Orellana, 26, the manager of Radio Joconguera in the town of Candelaria, in the western department of Lempira, was gunned down yesterday morning, bringing the number of Honduran journalists killed since the start of the year to three. A total of 12 journalists have been killed in the past 18 months in Honduras without any of their murders being solved.

“Orellana headed a commercial radio station that works with civil society organizations and belongs to an alternative network of community radio stations,” Reporters Without Borders said. “He was also a member of the Broad Front of Popular Resistance (FARP), an opposition movement. All this means that he was kind of journalist who was liable to be a target for violence.”

The press freedom organisation added: “The motive for his murder has yet to be determined, but the possibility that it was linked to his journalistic or political activities should be prioritized in an investigation that needs to be carried out quickly. When will there be justice in Honduras? When will the impunity end?

“Honduras’ recent readmission to the Organization of American States, has not in any way addressed the problems created by the June 2009 coup d’état or the resulting challenges that the country still faces – the need to restore the rule of law and establish real pluralism. The international community must not forget these demands.”

3. Looks like it is an even dozen murdered
or maybe 13 counting Orellana.

Nery Jeremias Orellana

En 2010 corrieron con la misma suerte al menos 10 periodistas, según registros de organismos de derechos humanos, y en lo que va de 2011 ya son dos los asesinados.

5. Thanks, and thanks for the nice photo of the journalist. What a shame.
He had real intensity in his eyes, and intelligence, and courage.

Clearly no right-winger.

Beatiful brilliant green in his shirt, even. What a loss.

What a world which allows monsters to destroy the good ones. Of course, the good ones aren't blood-thirsty demons, either! They are not the criminals. What a shame there is no protection from the scum.

Doesn't seem fair.
